The MTU should remain at 1500, extending the frame size as per IEEE 802.3. Adding IFCAP_VLAN_MTU to the if_capabilities field in the smsc driver solves the problem. The datasheet for the LAN9512 chip, section 3.2.3 states that the chip supports the extended frame. The internal NIC had died, so I am using an external NIC connected via USB. To my delight, FreeBSD detected it immediately and it just worked. It was wonderful! However, troubles began when I added an NFS mount to my /etc/fstab. Upon booting, due to the fact the USB device isn't recognised and connected until after the booting process has finished, booting hangs with an error. I suggested turning on hub debug to see if it would provide clues about the power, and somehow that made it work. Some kind of timing problem that was "cured" by the extra debug output, maybe? I also tried on my rpi-b attaching a thumb drive that requires 200ma, and it is able to attach without any errors, so there's something more than just the power involved I guess. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.
