You should know though that CentOS 7.2 is older then 6.8. Not all c7 packages contain a newer version. Also, c7 officially supports only amd64. Centos.org still provides 32 bit packages, but packages from other sources tend to be 64 bit only. The linux-c7-* infrastructure ports support 64 bit but all Linux application ports are still 32 bit as far as I know. So whether c7 works for you depends on which applications you want to run. To switch to c7: 1. Remove linux_base-c6 and everything that depends on it. 2. Make sure that the directories bin, lib, lib64 and sbin in /compat/linux are gone, because they will become symbolic links. 3. Add DEFAULT_VERSIONS+=linux=c7 (32 bit only) or DEFAULT_VERSIONS+=linux=c7_64 (32 and 64 bit support) to /etc/make.conf. 4. Install linux_base-c7 and other ports. As far as I could find out, more or less all bhyve manager/wrapper tools use zvols as the backing store for "raw" guest disk images. I looked at * chyves * iohyve * vm-bhyve So far so good. Yet, this blog article has some very valid (IMHO) points against using them: http://jrs-s.net/2016/06/16/psa-snapshots-are-better-than-zvols Another thing I'm pondering is: wouldn't it be better to run on UFS so you can dedicate as much memory as possible to VMs? So I'm a bit puzzled now on what to do. Any opinions, experiences, war stories to share? If you have machine with "small memory" and can't expand it (e.g. Xeon E3 older then v5 can take 32GB max) then you are better to use UFS. But if you have machine which can use more memory it is better to buy some additional memory modules and use all features of ZFS (replication, snapshots, zvols or quotas etc.) So it depends on your workload and HW possibilities. And as always - the best way is to do you own benchmarks for your workload. I did it in the past with UFS / ZFS under VirtualBox machines and figured out that SSD as ZIL / L2ARC is almost useless for our setup. By default ZFS does create ZVOLs with reservations matching their size. The problem is that there is no way to signal to a VM that the overcommited SAN just ran out of space and your stupid operator is looking for ways to increase free space *NOW* and the VM should just retry. Instead the VM gets a general write error. To keep this promise ZFS has to reserve enough space to change each bit in the ZVOL if you take a snapshot of a ZVOL. Other datasets are created without reservations by default because the POSIX file system API can report ENOSPC if the file system ran out of space. Of course you get the same problem if you storage VM images in a file system there is just no sane default setting protecting you, because you just outsmarted your poor operating system. > Another thing I'm pondering is: wouldn't it be better to > run on UFS so you can dedicate as much memory > as possible to VMs? ZFS isn't a memory eating boogie man. Yes ZFS uses a lot of memory and requires more memory than UFS for stable performance, but you get a lot in return: * End to end checksumming * Snapshots * Remote replication of snaphosts * Painless volume management * ... > So I'm a bit puzzled now on what to do. Any opinions, > experiences, war stories to share? ZFS saved my bacon more than once. Twice it detected and corrected datacorruption on dying hardware in time. With a normal FS both cases would have turned into bitrot spreading into the backups until it's too late. Without ZFS you would require a reliable hardware RAID controller (if such a magical creature exists) instead (or build a software RAID1+0 from gmirror and gstripe). Bhyve doesn't support page deduplication but it doesn't wire down guest memory unless you asked it to, but you have to wire down guest memory to use PCI passthrough. If I were picking VM hosts today I would go with LGA 2011 v3 boards having least eight DDR4 slots per socket. Maybe use some nice >= 2TB NVMe SSDs and suddenly your limited by CPU cycles and storage space instead of IOPS and RAM. Use the bhyve AHCI emulation instead of virtio block devices because the emulated SATA disks support TRIM which translate into BIO_DELETE on the ZVOLs releasing the backing storage while keeping what ever reservations are in place. This reduces pressure on the ZFS allocator and reduces backup/replication times. An other thing I learned the hard way is that ZVOL are set in stone at the ZVOL creation. You have to (cam)dd everything to change the block size. The default ZVOL block size is 8K which isn't wrong but your guests need to align their file systems (and swap) correctly or you'll suffer from write amplification. And ZFS RAID-Z really sucks for such small block sizes. Use mirrored VDEVs in your pools or you will suffer from massive metadata overhead and disappointing IOPS. Finally if your ZFS remote replication seems to slow the cause is probably trying to force a bursty stream without enough buffering through a TCP connection. ZFS send doesn't buffer the replication stream internally and block on write to stdout letting the source Zpool idle. ZFS receive blocks on reads from stdin and writes to the destination pool. If either ZFS send or ZFS receive block on disk I/O the other will block very soon as well. Something the misc/buffer port with a few hundred MiB memory buffer of 128KiB blocks on each side solves this problem. Sometimes with this optimization ZFS replications are *too* fast and starve normal workloads of disk or network I/O bandwidth. -- Jan Bramkamp From owner-freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Thu Nov 17 10:36:21 2016 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DC63AC451B3 for ; Thu, 17 Nov 2016 10:36:21 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from hausen@punkt.de) Received: from kagate.punkt.de (kagate.punkt.de [217.29.33.131]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 5D679107A for ; Thu, 17 Nov 2016 10:36:20 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from hausen@punkt.de) Received: from hugo10.ka.punkt.de (hugo10.ka.punkt.de [217.29.44.10]) by gate2.intern.punkt.de with ESMTP id uAHAaIA5074624 for ; Thu, 17 Nov 2016 11:36:18 +0100 (CET) Received: from [217.29.44.220] ([217.29.44.220]) by hugo10.ka.punkt.de (8.14.2/8.14.2) with ESMTP id uAHAaHTe081867 for ; Thu, 17 Nov 2016 11:36:18 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from hausen@punkt.de) Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 Mime-Version: 1.0 (Mac OS X Mail 9.3 \(3124\)) Subject: Re: bhyve: zvols for guest disk - yes or no? Perhaps I'll describe the intention of this project. All your = suggestions are great for a heavy virtualisation platform. In our case we just want a cheap, yet "reliable enough" platform to host a handful of rocket.chat instances. While rocket.chat claims FreeBSD support that's way behind compared to running the product on Linux. We found Ubuntu to be a good choice in this case. Unfortunately the application's architecture doesn't easily fit running multiple instances on one kernel/OS. The absence of current FreeBSD support rules out jails. So a full-fledged hypervisor is called for. And we will use a system with two mirrored SATA disks to run no more than 10 Ubuntu guests with at most 4 GB each and 100 GB of guest disk space. 1 or 2 TB of spinning rust in a mirror, that's all. At least rocket.chat is not performance hungry. The only issue I saw is RAM (CPU supports at most 32 GB) and the ZVOL "issue" I initially asked about. When you are working with file system default 8k block size is too small. Setting it up to 64k will save a lot writes for host. This is due to most current filesystems do work correctly with extents/big blocks: * Linux: ext4, xfs - full support; * BSD: ufs - disabled, need to be enabled on format, zfs - full support; * NTFS: no support, but you can use 64k blocks with Win XP - Win 10 (though Win XP can't boot off such partition). Setting block size bigger makes fragmentation less common (check your `zpool list`) and saves writes. When guest writes one 64k chunk ZFS writes 8 separate 8k blocks (+ metadata and stuff) and this is not good for the speed. On the opposite when you have some database inside VM you need to prepare disk for it accordingly. Guides for using PostgreSQL and MySQL apply to VM's too. MSSQL on the other hand uses 64k extents to work with database internally so raising block size to 64k would be good for it. -- Sphinx of black quartz judge my vow. IIRC MySQL with InnoDB uses 16kiB blocks and Postgres uses 8kiB blocks. UFS2 in FreeBSD defaults to 32kiB blocks with 4kiB fragments and you can't raise the block size to more than 64kiB and the documentation recommends keeping the block size to fragement size ratio at 8/1, but I don't know why. This gets even more complicated if you want to use GELI because GELI can't reliably deal with blocks larger than the physical page size (4kiB on i386/amd64). The defaults work out perfectly in this case and changing them can break your systems in interesting ways like GELI trying to allocate a second page worth of memory after processing the first page and failing... If you your main use case for the ZVOLs is MySQL inside the guests you're probably best of with a 16KiB blocksize for the ZVOLs, aligning your partitions to multiples of 16KiB and checking your guest file system parameters as well. Keep in mind that I didn't test this myself. -- Jan Bramkamp From owner-freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Thu Nov 17 21:28:00 2016 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 568FDC4668E for ; Thu, 17 Nov 2016 21:28:00 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from shuriku@shurik.kiev.ua) Received: from graal.it-profi.org.ua (graal.shurik.kiev.ua [193.239.74.7]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 0CCECDA for ; Thu, 17 Nov 2016 21:27:59 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from shuriku@shurik.kiev.ua) Received: from [93.183.208.50] (helo=thinkpad.it-profi.org.ua) by graal.it-profi.org.ua with esmtpa (Exim 4.87 (FreeBSD)) (envelope-from ) id 1c7Trd-000NGw-ML for freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org; Thu, 17 Nov 2016 23:04:57 +0200 From: Alexandr Krivulya Subject: poor ipsec perfomance on hyper-v To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Message-ID: <3cd47b8b-f47e-d696-cade-b2783d0cc987@shurik.kiev.ua> Date: Thu, 17 Nov 2016 23:04:56 +0200 User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; FreeBSD amd64; rv:45.0) Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/45.4.0 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-SA-Exim-Connect-IP: 93.183.208.50 X-SA-Exim-Mail-From: shuriku@shurik.kiev.ua X-SA-Exim-Scanned: No (on graal.it-profi.org.ua); SAEximRunCond expanded to false X-BeenThere: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.23 Precedence: list List-Id: Development of Emulators of other operating systems List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 17 Nov 2016 21:28:00 -0000 Hi! We have freebsd10.3 gateway running in our private hyper-v cloud (Windows Server 2012R2). Throughput of ipsec tunnel is very poor - ~3-5Mb/s sometimes slow down to few Kb/s with high cpu load and a lot of interrupts.Downloading over ftp is about 30-40Mb/s. Disabling tso,rxcsum and txcsum on hn interfaces do nothing. One thing to note - ZFS isn't holy grail and has own problems too. For example there is not fsck_zfs and there are some cases where you can end up with broken pool and because of its complexity the only thing you can do is to restore from backup. This can occured on ZFS with higher probability than on simple UFS2. Nothing as complex as ZFS could be. > For example there is not fsck_zfs and there are some cases where you can end > up with broken pool and because of its complexity the only thing you can > do is to restore from backup. Because ZFS takes a different approach to data and meta data integrity. By design ZFS should be able to automatically recover without dataloss from all cases a fsck_zfs could handle without user interaction. This is possible because ZFS is a Merkle-DAG (edges are stored inside nodes and contain the checksums of the referenced nodes) and stores multiple copies of important metadata (in addition to mirroring and RAID-Z). Fsck on UFS includes a good amount of guesswork which usually works because UFS the on-disk data structures are a lot simpler. That way you end up with some state the kernel can mount without panic()ing, but it doesn't imply that its always exactly the state the users and applications expected the system to be in. > This can occured on ZFS with higher > probability than on simple UFS2. Only if you pick your metrics with a strong bias in favor of UFS. The ZFS data structures are more complicated and you can't repair a ZFS pool with a hex editor and a pocket calculator. At the same time ZFS protects it data (including meta data) a lot better from corruption. * ZFS uses a copy on write B-tree with path copying instead of modifying live data in place. * Because the ZFS graph is directed and cycle-free its edges can (and do) contain the checksum of the pointed to node. * By default ZFS stores three copies of vital pool level meta data and two copies of dataset level meta data in addition to VDEV level redundancy. * The UFS and ZFS code has been battle tested in production enough years. UFS is not suitable for today's large file systems. It trusts its backing storage to much. UFS can't protect from your data from undetected read errors because it doesn't store any checksums along the data. It can't help you detect phantom writes because there a are checksums in the edges. You could swap two blocks of file content with each other and UFS wouldn't notice. The ratio of disk capacity to throughput has reached a point where it is no longer acceptable to run fsck at boot. UFS2 on FreeBSD offers soft-updates and snapshots which allow fsck to run in the background but this requires a lot of RAM and steals a lot IOPS from the other applications running on the system. Running with journaled soft-updates instead requires even more trust in notoriously lying disk, disk controllers and their caches. Additionally UFS snapshots and journaled soft-updates are incompatible and without snapshots you can't create consistent backups of your file systems. UFS is a great file system for the hardware it was designed for, but hardware evolved and now we have to deal with orders of magnitude more storage on disks which haven gotten a lot more reliable. There are still use-cases for UFS and it is a good fit for small systems even if most of these systems could use a NAND flash optimized file system as well. -- Jan Bramkamp From owner-freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Fri Nov 18 11:59:20 2016 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D3A11C47775 for ;
