When the IP that gives you access to the gateway goes away, the routing entries does too. Th= en the IP is readded, and the gateway is added. This seems to be expected behaviour, as you are asking the installer to ple= ase set my IP address and gateway to these values I entered via the dialog. So, if we fix it to not remove your resolv.conf, will that solve your probl= em? The installer normally assumes / and /etc are read-only, and that /etc/resolv.conf is already a symlink to /tmp/bsdinstall_etc/resolv.conf When you are manually configuring the system, are you actually removing that symlink? or writing to the /tmp destination? --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-sysinstall@freebsd.org Mon Jan 18 13:16:52 2016 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sysinstall@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A6E98A867E9 for ; Mon, 18 Jan 2016 13:16:52 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 9788B1DA8 for ; Mon, 18 Jan 2016 13:16:52 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id u0IDGqlP021851 for ; Mon, 18 Jan 2016 13:16:52 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-sysinstall@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 206355] Installer interferes with manual network setup, preventing netinstall from succeeding Date: Mon, 18 Jan 2016 13:16:52 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: bin X-Bugzilla-Version: 10.2-RELEASE X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Many People X-Bugzilla-Who: venture37@geeklan.co.uk X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-sysinstall@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-sysinstall@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.20 Precedence: list List-Id: Sysinstall Work List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 18 Jan 2016 13:16:52 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D206355 --- Comment #2 from Sevan Janiyan --- (In reply to Allan Jude from comment #1) "resetting the IP address always resets the routing table." But I am not actually making any changes, just confirming the information that's read in by the installer that I'd already configured. "When the IP that gives you access to the gateway goes away, the routing entries does too. Then the IP is readded, and the gateway is added." But the installer is incapable of adding the route back in for the gateway = in this scenario. As the gateway IP address is in another subnet, you first ne= ed a route to reach the gateway IP address before you are able to use that IP address as the default gateway. A better option might be to compare the information that was read in by the installer & the information confirmed by the user, if there is no differenc= e. Don't do anything. "When you are manually configuring the system, are you actually removing th= at symlink? or writing to the /tmp destination?" I'm just running echo "nameserver 8.8.8.8" >> /etc/resolv.conf --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-sysinstall@freebsd.org Mon Jan 18 16:00:09 2016 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sysinstall@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BB4C3A86350 for ; Mon, 18 Jan 2016 16:00:09 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id AB991197C for ; Mon, 18 Jan 2016 16:00:09 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id u0IG09AW052313 for ; Mon, 18 Jan 2016 16:00:09 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-sysinstall@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 206355] Installer interferes with manual network setup, preventing netinstall from succeeding Date: Mon, 18 Jan 2016 16:00:09 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: bin X-Bugzilla-Version: 10.2-RELEASE X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Many People X-Bugzilla-Who: allanjude@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-sysinstall@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-sysinstall@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.20 Precedence: list List-Id: Sysinstall Work List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 18 Jan 2016 16:00:09 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D206355 --- Comment #3 from Allan Jude --- (In reply to Sevan Janiyan from comment #2) "But the installer is incapable of adding the route back in for the gateway= in this scenario. As the gateway IP address is in another subnet, you first ne= ed a route to reach the gateway IP address before you are able to use that IP address as the default gateway." We probably should do this, but for now, you'd just say 'no' when asked to configure the network and let it keep using your existing configuration. I would first like to focus on how/why your resolv.conf was getting clobber= ed. It looks like both 'auto' and 'script' entirely remove /tmp/bsdinstall_tmp = when they start, and since /etc/resolv.conf is a symlink to /tmp/bsdinstall_tmp/resolv.conf on the boot media, this is where things are going wrong. I suppose it could backup resolv.conf if it exists first, then restore it. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-sysinstall@freebsd.org Mon Jan 18 18:07:48 2016 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sysinstall@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BB45AA8324C for ; Mon, 18 Jan 2016 18:07:48 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id ABE961890 for ; Mon, 18 Jan 2016 18:07:48 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id u0II7mPa030839 for ; Mon, 18 Jan 2016 18:07:48 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-sysinstall@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 206355] Installer interferes with manual network setup, preventing netinstall from succeeding Date: Mon, 18 Jan 2016 18:07:48 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: bin X-Bugzilla-Version: 10.2-RELEASE X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Many People X-Bugzilla-Who: venture37@geeklan.co.uk X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-sysinstall@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-sysinstall@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.20 Precedence: list List-Id: Sysinstall Work List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 18 Jan 2016 18:07:48 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D206355 --- Comment #4 from Sevan Janiyan --- (In reply to Allan Jude from comment #3) "I suppose it could backup resolv.conf if it exists first, then restore it."
