Long answer: No, there are currently no plans to support FreeBSD in OpenStack. There was a blueprint to begin introducing support for compute in Nova, but that was shelved a couple years ago, with no interested parties (read: corporate sponsors) with the desire and skill to do so. I understand this isn't the answer you're seeking, but this topic has been visited a few times in the past, with no real movement. IMHO - if this is something that people see a need for I would start by focusing on seeing what the state of libvirt is on FreeBSD and bhyve. I have lost track of where the libvirt code base is in terms of bhyve support. Another two bits...I've worked on OpenStack for several years now and the only opinion I have of it at this point is that we are probably lucky to not support it. The code base is a horrible mess, with lots of Linux'isms baked into it. Yet even if you are running OpenStack on a fully supported platform like RHEL you will still need to do quite a bit of hacking to make it work in your environment. I've even seen vendors check in untested code in the primary github repositories causing a fair amount of headaches. In light of this I reckon there is room for an alternative to OpenStack in the market...hopefully one based on a cleaner implementation :) Cheers, -pete -- Pete Wright pete@nomadlogic.org nomadlogicLA From owner-freebsd-virtualization@freebsd.org Tue Aug 23 18:20:47 2016 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-virtualization@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 700ADBC3B98 for ; Tue, 23 Aug 2016 18:20:47 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from rainer@ultra-secure.de) Received: from connect.ultra-secure.de (connect.ultra-secure.de [88.198.71.201]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CF02A1C78 for ; Tue, 23 Aug 2016 18:20:46 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from rainer@ultra-secure.de) Received: (Haraka outbound); Tue, 23 Aug 2016 20:20:44 +0200 Authentication-Results: connect.ultra-secure.de; iprev=pass; auth=pass (plain); spf=none smtp.mailfrom=ultra-secure.de Received-SPF: None (connect.ultra-secure.de: domain of ultra-secure.de does not designate 217.71.83.52 as permitted sender) receiver=connect.ultra-secure.de; identity=mailfrom; client-ip=217.71.83.52; helo=[192.168.1.200]; envelope-from= Received: from [192.168.1.200] (217-071-083-052.ip-tech.ch [217.71.83.52]) by connect.ultra-secure.de (Haraka/2.6.2-toaster) with ESMTPSA id AE0EF332-193F-47E0-9027-0968BD4F1C74.1 envelope-from (authenticated bits=0) (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=AES256-SHA verify=NO); Tue, 23 Aug 2016 20:20:42 +0200 Mime-Version: 1.0 (Mac OS X Mail 9.3 \(3124\)) Subject: Re: OpenStack on FreeBSD From: Rainer Duffner In-Reply-To: <42e25cfc-29ac-4782-bec9-7dbb91d12b7d@nomadlogic.org> Date: Tue, 23 Aug 2016 20:20:40 +0200 Cc: freebsd-virtualization@freebsd.org Message-Id: <3D8BB567-A77B-4144-8AD6-E56FF6ED5760@ultra-secure.de> References: <42e25cfc-29ac-4782-bec9-7dbb91d12b7d@nomadlogic.org> To: Pete Wright X-Mailer: Apple Mail (2.3124) X-Haraka-GeoIP: EU, CH, 451km X-Haraka-ASN: 24951 X-Haraka-GeoIP-Received: X-Haraka-ASN: 24951 217.71.80.0/20 X-Haraka-ASN-CYMRU: asn=24951 net=217.71.80.0/20 country=CH assignor=ripencc date=2003-08-07 X-Haraka-FCrDNS: 217-071-083-052.ip-tech.ch X-Haraka-p0f: os="Mac OS X " link_type="DSL" distance=12 total_conn=2 shared_ip=N X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 3.4.1 (2015-04-28) on spamassassin X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-2.9 required=5.0 tests=ALL_TRUSTED,BAYES_00, HTML_MESSAGE,URIBL_BLOCKED autolearn=ham autolearn_force=no version=3.4.1 X-Haraka-Karma: score: 6, good: 996, bad: 1, connections: 1239, history: 995, asn_score: 477, asn_connections: 495, asn_good: 477, asn_bad: 0, pass:asn, asn_all_good, relaying Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.22 X-BeenThere: freebsd-virtualization@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.22 Precedence: list List-Id: "Discussion of various virtualization techniques FreeBSD supports." This fix does set the heap to use same amount of memory as the zfsloader is using. To make it possible to test and verify loader functions, bhyve is providing very useful option, but it also means, we like to keep featu= re parity with [zfs]loader as close as possible. At this point I've sort of dropped the ball on this idea (for now at least). Technically, it's not very complicated task to get OpenStack working with libvirt/Xen/FreeBSD backend (a little more complicated in libvirt/bhyve case, but mainly because bhyve misses some features needed by OpenStack). Practically, OpenStack development process is quite fast and new features submission is complex (IMHO). 1. It requires blueprint/spec submission for new features. This usually spawns a discussion and it's necessary to re-iterate on the spec several times before it gets accepted. Additionally, FreeBSD support would require a number of specs for several components (nova, neutron and maybe cinder to start with), and additionally specs for refactoring of the current code for portability (and that needs to go in line with other work that's happening in those components). 2. There should be a 3rd party CI for FreeBSD that requires time to setup and maintain and hardware to run on. So I decided that's not something that I have enough free time to work on. I will try to work with FreeBSD inside OpenStack and see how it works first.. Thank you for all hints and great work!! :-) Tomek -- CeDeROM, SQ7MHZ, http://www.tomek.cedro.info
