The issue has to do with checksum offloaded packets arriving from a DHCP se= rver running in dom-0 on Xen, and dhclient getting fooled by those. I'm attaching a proposed patch that fixes this issue. I've tested this in a FreeBSD 11.0 VM on Xen 4.4.4 with a Linux 4.1.12-based dom-0 kernel. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-xen@freebsd.org Mon Feb 27 10:19:30 2017 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-xen@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EBDFECEF034 for ; This issue is cased by a bug in the VM subsystem, kib is currently looking into it, and patches will be committed soon hopefully. The Xen patch I've sent is the FreeBSD handlers for the gnttab lib, with that everything is already upstream :). I will backport the Xen patch to your Xen package once the VM issue is solved. However, I expect this workaround to have an unnecessary performance impact= on receive packet throughput over xn0; basically you're using a 'big hammer' to completely disable an offload only because one application (dhclient) can't deal with a couple of UDP packets. Besides, if you look at upstream mainline ISC DHCP, there is similar code f= or Linux guests as well: My proposed patch took the approach of making the bare minimal fix to the mainline FreeBSD dhclient to achieve the same end result. For such packets it will set CHECKSUM_UNNECESS= ARY * if their checksums are okay. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-xen@freebsd.org Mon Feb 27 18:17:16 2017 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-xen@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B375FCF01DC for ; Mon, 27 Feb 2017 18:17:16 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 97CD0652 for ; Mon, 27 Feb 2017 18:17:16 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id v1RIHGqw021717 for ; Mon, 27 Feb 2017 18:17:16 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-xen@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 188990] [xen] dhclient(8) does not accept DHCP Offer on FreeBSD 10 as Xen DomU Guest Date: Mon, 27 Feb 2017 18:17:16 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: bin X-Bugzilla-Version: 10.0-RELEASE X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: royger@freebsd.org X-Bugzilla-Status: In Progress X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: Normal X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-xen@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-xen@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.23 Precedence: list List-Id: Discussion of the freebsd port to xen - implementation and usage List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 27 Feb 2017 18:17:16 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D188990 --- Comment #15 from Roger Pau Monn=C3=83=C2=A9 --- (In reply to Bhavesh Davda from comment #14) And the mbuf(9) man page says: "If a particular network interface just indicates success or failure of TCP= or UDP checksum validation without returning the exact value of the checksum to the host CPU, its driver can mark CSUM_DATA_VALID and CSUM_PSEUDO_HDR in csum_flags, and set csum_data to 0xFFFF hexadecimal to indicate a valid checksum." I think that's what maps best to NETRXF_data_validated/CHECKSUM_UNNECESSARY= (in fact it's the only combination of outbound flags that make sense for the use case here AFAICT), but I'm not a network expert. I think setting CSUM_IP_CHECKED and CSUM_IP_VALID in the netfront driver for incoming packets is wrong, because netfront is also setting the header to 0xffff, and that's only valid with (CSUM_DATA_VALID |=C2=A0CSUM_PSEUDO_HDR). --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-xen@freebsd.org Mon Feb 27 19:14:35 2017 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-xen@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BB7E9CF0FDD for ; Mon, 27 Feb 2017 19:14:35 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id AAD6B5F7 for ; Mon, 27 Feb 2017 19:14:35 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id v1RJEZl3054038 for ; Mon, 27 Feb 2017 19:14:35 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-xen@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 188990] [xen] dhclient(8) does not accept DHCP Offer on FreeBSD 10 as Xen DomU Guest Date: Mon, 27 Feb 2017 19:14:35 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: bin X-Bugzilla-Version: 10.0-RELEASE X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: bhavesh.davda@gmail.com X-Bugzilla-Status: In Progress X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: Normal X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-xen@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-xen@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.23 Precedence: list List-Id: Discussion of the freebsd port to xen - implementation and usage List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 27 Feb 2017 19:14:35 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D188990 --- Comment #16 from Bhavesh Davda --- (In reply to Roger Pau Monn=C3=83=C2=A9 from comment #15) Yes, your comment #15 convinces me that returning only CSUM_DATA_VALID and CSUM_PSEUDO_HDR with csum_data set to 0xffff is the "right" way to fix this, along with a corresponding change to dhclient to skip UDP checksum validati= on if it finds the checksum in the UDP header to be 0xffff. I'm attaching the associated patch required to dhclient. Please review. Unfortunately I'm not a FreeBSD expert to know if there is a quick and easy= way to rebuild just the netfront driver in my FreeBSD 11.0 VM with your proposed patch, but hopefully you are, and can test your patch along with my new dhclient patch, at a minimum to verify this doesn't regress anything. While I'm not an openstack nova person and can't do anything about their ch= oice of using this workaround, I'm hoping that for FreeBSD at least we can teach dhclient about checksum offloaded packets. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-xen@freebsd.org Fri Mar 3 16:46:14 2017 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-xen@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C6559CF6E6B for ; Fri, 3 Mar 2017 16:46:14 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id B325515A4 for ; Fri, 3 Mar 2017 16:46:14 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id v23GkEFh068887 for ; Fri, 3 Mar 2017 16:46:14 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-xen@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 188990] [xen] dhclient(8) does not accept DHCP Offer on FreeBSD 10 as Xen DomU Guest Date: Fri, 03 Mar 2017 16:46:14 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: bin X-Bugzilla-Version: 10.0-RELEASE X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: royger@freebsd.org X-Bugzilla-Status: In Progress X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: Normal X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-xen@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-xen@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.23 Precedence: list List-Id: Discussion of the freebsd port to xen - implementation and usage List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 03 Mar 2017 16:46:14 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D188990 --- Comment #22 from Roger Pau Monn=C3=83=C2=A9 --- (In reply to Bhavesh Davda from comment #20) In this case I would prefer so.
