By simply adding this array in vfs_bio.c in the previous commit I'm able to reproduce the issue. On powerpc64 this array has a size of about 520KB, mainly because the defau= lt MAXCPU value for it is 256, which makes the following bufdomain field take a lot of space: struct bufqueue bd_subq[MAXCPU + 1]; /* Per-cpu sub queues + global */ If I change bd_subq size to 17, for instance, then I'm able to go further, = but then I get stuck after this message: usb_needs_explore_all: no devclass I don't know if this is related to same issue or not. However, it is still not clear to me why this extra KBs are a problem for powerpc64. It is probably something related to FDT, because unsetting "usef= dt" in the bootloader makes the system bootable again, even without the change above. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Wed Mar 28 02:29:50 2018 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B4BFDF4F986 for ; Wed, 28 Mar 2018 02:29:50 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org (mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:3]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client CN "mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org", Issuer "Let's Encrypt Authority X3" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 5688A6F674 for ; Wed, 28 Mar 2018 02:29:50 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 9BC07112DA for ; Wed, 28 Mar 2018 02:29:49 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id w2S2TnYk040459 for ; Wed, 28 Mar 2018 02:29:49 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: (from www@localhost) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id w2S2TnA0040457 for freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.org; Wed, 28 Mar 2018 02:29:49 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) X-Authentication-Warning: kenobi.freebsd.org: www set sender to bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org using -f From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 226974] kernel DSI read trap at boot Date: Wed, 28 Mar 2018 02:29:49 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: kern X-Bugzilla-Version: CURRENT X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: marklmi26-fbsd@yahoo.com X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: cc Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.25 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 28 Mar 2018 02:29:50 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D226974 Mark Millard changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CC| |marklmi26-fbsd@yahoo.com --- Comment #4 from Mark Millard --- What is the relationship of mp_ncpus vs. mp_maxid as used in the code from vfs_bio.c : static void bd_init(struct bufdomain *bd) { . . . bd->bd_cleanq =3D &bd->bd_subq[mp_ncpus]; bq_init(bd->bd_cleanq, QUEUE_CLEAN, -1, "bufq clean lock"); for (i =3D 0; i <=3D mp_maxid; i++) bq_init(&bd->bd_subq[i], QUEUE_CLEAN, i, "bufq clean subqueue lock"); . . . Like on=20 > Linux, the default ABI on big-endian will likely remain V1 for the=20 > indefinite future, This is an important distinction to make (big-endian !=3D ELFv1, and ELFv= 1 !=3D big-endian). But do note that on Linux, the musl libc (in use by distros like Alpine, Ad=C3=A9lie, postmarketOS) only supports ELFv2, even in big-endian mode. = And as the maintainer of Ad=C3=A9lie using it as a daily-driver on an iMac G5= , it's definitely something you can use (the only breakage I've seen so far on Linux is the PCRE JIT ignoring __CALL_ELF and inserting function descriptors anyway). So I wouldn't discount moving to ELFv2 ABI on BE if that is necessary to keep LLVM happy. It'd be some effort but it should work. If this is really something FreeBSD is interested in, you might even manage to convince me to put on my ports hat again, to help get the JIT patches in that are needed for upstreams that went comatose. One thing to check as an alternative patch: In kern/link_elf.c, at line 427, there is a line: linker_kernel_file->address +=3D KERNBASE; Could you replace this with: linker_kernel_file->address +=3D __startkernel; It's possible you will have to prevent the following if statement from runn= ing as well. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.=
