I've recently attempted to install a Debian 9.4.0 x86_64 guest. The installer ran to completion without issue, and I then rebooted into the installed system, again without issue. I then shut the system down and tried to bring it up...=20 pid 71802 (grub-bhyve), uid 0: exited on signal 11 (core dumped) The exact commands I'm using to start the VM are: /usr/local/sbin/grub-bhyve \ -m /storage/vm/rosemary/device.map \ -r host \ -d /storage/vm/rosemary \ -c /dev/nmdm56A \ -M 512M \ rosemary /sbin/ifconfig tap56 create || true /sbin/ifconfig bridge0 addm tap56 || true exec /usr/sbin/bhyve \ -A \ -H \ -P \ -c 1 \ -U a3ca8efb-7a3b-4ad7-b059-85ef739d72f3 \ -m 512M \ -s 0,hostbridge \ -s 4,ahci-hd,/dev/zvol/storage/vm/rosemary/disk0 \ -s 5,virtio-net,tap56 \ -s 31,lpc \ -l com1,/dev/nmdm56A \ rosemary The device.map looks like: (hd0) /dev/zvol/storage/vm/rosemary/disk0 (cd0) /storage/images/debian-9.4.0-amd64-netinst.iso The grub.cfg looks like: linux (hd0,msdos1)/vmlinuz root=3D/dev/sda1 initrd (hd0,msdos1)/initrd.img boot I see no output after the boot command, the crash occurs seemingly immediately. If there's any information that would be helpful, let me know. I can probably provide the /storage/vm/rosemary/disk0 volume as a compressed "zfs send" if necessary. I'm on a fresh install of FreeBSD 11.1-RELEASE-p9 and am using grub-bhyve (GRUB-BHYVE) 2.00:0.40. I've not had trouble with any other guests (running a mix of FreeBSD and OpenBSD guests without issue). --=20 Mark Raynsford | http://www.io7m.com --Sig_/POxrmaW+QVIShIIXoAdNzp6 Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Description: OpenPGP digital signature -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iHUEARYKAB0WIQS4Thd0dhbGF0xo1eVcGntxKBLMBQUCWueTJAAKCRBcGntxKBLM BUJjAQDCxkzofFbyA2lI/f867ZIEWoeqEpcRtrQ1aZsCahTpLQD+LDKmwUBDCmOG 9vClHd6aL+r431zsTF6YlxOYqlYQnQk= =2+k/ -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --Sig_/POxrmaW+QVIShIIXoAdNzp6-- From owner-freebsd-virtualization@freebsd.org Mon Apr 30 22:49:13 2018 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-virtualization@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B3A45FB8AD3 for ; Mon, 30 Apr 2018 22:49:13 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (mailman.ysv.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::50:5]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 318CA7CD74 for ; Mon, 30 Apr 2018 22:49:13 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) id DFEA9FB8AD2; Mon, 30 Apr 2018 22:49:12 +0000 (UTC) Delivered-To: virtualization@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CD485FB8AD1 for ; Mon, 30 Apr 2018 22:49:12 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org (mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:3]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client CN "mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org", Issuer "Let's Encrypt Authority X3" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 699917CD70 for ; Mon, 30 Apr 2018 22:49:12 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id BDCBE4EFF for ; Mon, 30 Apr 2018 22:49:11 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id w3UMnB4I076590 for ; Mon, 30 Apr 2018 22:49:11 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: (from www@localhost) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id w3UMnBXr076589 for virtualization@FreeBSD.org; Mon, 30 Apr 2018 22:49:11 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) X-Authentication-Warning: kenobi.freebsd.org: www set sender to bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org using -f From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: virtualization@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 227880] `kldstat -m` does not work for vmm.ko (while `kldstat -f` does) Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2018 22:49:11 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: misc X-Bugzilla-Version: CURRENT X-Bugzilla-Keywords: bhyve, needs-qa X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: grehan@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: virtualization@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: cc Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-virtualization@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.25 Precedence: list List-Id: "Discussion of various virtualization techniques FreeBSD supports." Hello! This is still reproducible, yes. I've recompiled the port with WITH_DEBUG=3Dyes (which, unfortunately, took most of the day due to having to compile the gcc-6 dependency). Unfortunately, this didn't yield a usable backtrace. I worked through this with someone in the #bhyve channel on Freenode. Essentially: I couldn't boot the image with the stripped grub-bhyve binary, this would crash reliably. Restarting the hardware didn't make any difference, and destroying the vm after each attempt didn't make any difference either. I couldn't boot the image with the debug grub-bhyve binary. The same applied to that as above. If I ran the debug binary in gdb 8, the program ran to completion without crashing. After running it a few times without crashing in gdb, both the stripped and debug grub-bhyve binaries would run to completion *outside of the debugger* without crashing! Both the stripped and debug grub-bhyve binaries reliably work now. I can boot the VM, reboot it, whatever. I've restarted the hardware many times and cannot reproduce the original crash. I've never seen anything like this and have no theories as to why it didn't work at all, and now works reliably despite nothing apparently having changed anywhere. --=20 Mark Raynsford | http://www.io7m.com --Sig_/PV0CpmXYvA45+I4eKjscRlS Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Description: OpenPGP digital signature -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iHUEARYKAB0WIQS4Thd0dhbGF0xo1eVcGntxKBLMBQUCWul79wAKCRBcGntxKBLM BdhgAP9ekkk+Pz5j6Tm8eMnpCm0FKdLlQFMvkmuz+CixiQPPmAD+KHkGiWlGYo7N 3bQhn0VTT9JW93UXpBcwOZ7vTeaemAo= =tU5Z -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --Sig_/PV0CpmXYvA45+I4eKjscRlS-- From owner-freebsd-virtualization@freebsd.org Wed May 2 09:59:03 2018 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-virtualization@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A9EF6FC80F1 for ; Wed, 2 May 2018 09:59:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from mike@reifenberger.com) Received: from app.eeeit.de (app.eeeit.de [188.68.43.176]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 41F3169150 for ; Wed, 2 May 2018 09:59:02 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from mike@reifenberger.com) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) (Authenticated sender: mike@reifenberger.com) by app.eeeit.de (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id 7CD176F114 for ; Wed, 2 May 2018 11:58:55 +0200 (CEST) Received: from ppp-93-104-92-16.dynamic.mnet-online.de (ppp-93-104-92-16.dynamic.mnet-online.de [93.104.92.16]) by app.eeeit.de (Horde Framework) with HTTPS; Wed, 02 May 2018 09:58:55 +0000 Date: Wed, 02 May 2018 09:58:55 +0000 Message-ID: <20180502095855.Horde.pnF1J3CvBGrJMXFBiwHibZM@app.eeeit.de> From: Michael Reifenberger To: freebsd-virtualization@freebsd.org Subject: Centos7 uefi boot problem with bhyve after update User-Agent: Horde Application Framework 5 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8; format=flowed; DelSp=Yes Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Content-Disposition: inline X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.25 X-BeenThere: freebsd-virtualization@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.25 Precedence: list List-Id: "Discussion of various virtualization techniques FreeBSD supports." The VM boots using UEFI: uefi-edk2-bhyve-0.1 Centos was installed and ist booting fine: CentOS Linux release 7.3.1611 (Core) /boot and /boot/efi are on a extra zvol: ... /dev/vda2 1014M 193M 822M 20% /boot /dev/vda1 100M 9.5M 91M 10% /boot/efi ... Now if updating to the latest Centos packages the VM doesn't boot anymore. The relevant screenshot ist attached, and can be found here: https://ibb.co/jFwDES Reverting the VM to the previous state solves the boot issue. Is this a known problem? How to resolve? BTW: A new installation of a recent Centos fails after the installation/reboot with the same error. Other Linux distros (Ubuntu) seem to be affectet too... Yes, confusingly they are often both referred to as "modules" and are often interchangeable. However, vmm.ko happens to contain three kernel module objects, and the two that succeed to load keep the .ko loaded. To confirm, try 'kldstat -m ppt' or 'kldstat -m ivhd' on the system that demonstrates the reported bug. This is sort of a WONTFIX, but it's also possible the Bhyve folks want to u= se this confusion as a reason to split up vmm.ko. Fortunately the cases where vmm.ko is loaded and fails are few and far betw= een these days. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-virtualization@freebsd.org Wed May 2 20:39:59 2018 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-virtualization@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0D4A0FB3FB8 for ; Wed, 2 May 2018 20:39:58 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (mailman.ysv.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::50:5]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6BA5C7CF31 for ; Wed, 2 May 2018 20:39:58 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) id 1B86EFB3FB7; Wed, 2 May 2018 20:39:58 +0000 (UTC) Delivered-To: virtualization@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BF0C6FB3FB3 for ; Wed, 2 May 2018 20:39:57 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org (mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:3]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client CN "mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org", Issuer "Let's Encrypt Authority X3" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 5198F7CF14 for ; Wed, 2 May 2018 20:39:56 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 54FB924E34 for ; Wed, 2 May 2018 20:39:55 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id w42KdsAp046586 for ; Wed, 2 May 2018 20:39:54 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: (from www@localhost) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id w42Kdsbh046585 for virtualization@FreeBSD.org; Wed, 2 May 2018 20:39:54 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) X-Authentication-Warning: kenobi.freebsd.org: www set sender to bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org using -f From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: virtualization@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 227880] `kldstat -m` does not work for vmm.ko (while `kldstat -n` does) Date: Wed, 02 May 2018 20:39:54 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: misc X-Bugzilla-Version: CURRENT X-Bugzilla-Keywords: bhyve, needs-qa X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: 0mp@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: virtualization@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-virtualization@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.25 Precedence: list List-Id: "Discussion of various virtualization techniques FreeBSD supports." It's after /EFI/BOOT/BOOTX64.EFI got loaded and before /EFI/centos/grubx64.efi gets loaded because of not beeing found... greetings --- Mike Gruß --- Michael Reifenberger From owner-freebsd-virtualization@freebsd.org Fri May 4 12:57:01 2018 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-virtualization@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1455EFACF06 for ; Fri, 4 May 2018 12:57:01 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from mike.gerdts@joyent.com) Received: from mail-pg0-x235.google.com (mail-pg0-x235.google.com [IPv6:2607:f8b0:400e:c05::235]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256 (128/128 bits)) (Client CN "smtp.gmail.com", Issuer "Google Internet Authority G2" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 6D5DC73F7A for ; Fri, 4 May 2018 12:57:00 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from mike.gerdts@joyent.com) Received: by mail-pg0-x235.google.com with SMTP id g20-v6so8731486pgv.1 for ; Fri, 04 May 2018 05:57:00 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=joyent.com; s=google; h=mime-version:in-reply-to:references:from:date:message-id:subject:to :cc; bh=o8DDBqdY2TVftnrZ0L15vjeqRhsEj9uHqQXcsYaVv88=; b=bPEfZaRY3QP9X+zDI1ah7mwwNSOCd9hOmf8VVEdi/fOWbwJPZKUXhb1e6+E+sP11RY 7OBSl880r9VoniZwd7m0wPAUgkH1vqZoUBo4/PKsDNypxwtU2AIYu+M+I4kcLElcPhvI jPQ+WENxX3rs6dzduxwmHosk9pZrkXpAYmpQQ= X-Google-DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=1e100.net; s=20161025; h=x-gm-message-state:mime-version:in-reply-to:references:from:date :message-id:subject:to:cc; bh=o8DDBqdY2TVftnrZ0L15vjeqRhsEj9uHqQXcsYaVv88=; b=VlA5b2APAjk9J0ErHT00ANmwqeMas1Gw7hBMbmQOK3lbqLJUQXPEZvX0MexySU+tGm sI3Ev7HN5ucSAatdS+LZln1zR3OZKKgR50fvrxWjtI5qKSoOwWIJVbz5k7hKUV1nLNHX XHkGkm7WtYPWNXJifHkaHNt2pHjhz3KdLzA2kk2wbBeNjEteRl4AH7vo9NaQEGoobqNs YksBJ39IWqijfRR5g9lIa3obxb24k6kvLe9gs8gTLmPVqVy2TlanjhfmfRkvLwxNW3MQ w8Qo1MEBtvns1Vj2MeStCwVb46gQc7QgVsUq0XRGVvATV20x1iCk8FkxUL8FND6734v6 mFHw== X-Gm-Message-State: ALQs6tDNKnvLeL1nzn3fxGD2DCm5iti/MLXnyaVyheFo2fxlMjA9+8du p5GkotKJdCVx6zxXEewJU/erNvpnnZ82Y4GcTe1urQ== X-Google-Smtp-Source: AB8JxZrkRLlbLTwVaMVYgt3RUeU7ot7ho4k56TtgS52kAveekqLaVYE/n/C55avGt1q+v9/CbG4Q8eRA9RhVzLzkjRw= X-Received: by 2002:a17:902:2702:: with SMTP id c2-v6mr27327777plb.297.1525438619288; Fri, 04 May 2018 05:56:59 -0700 (PDT) MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.100.163.208 with HTTP; Fri, 4 May 2018 05:56:58 -0700 (PDT) In-Reply-To: <20180504122635.Horde.BLpo7EULCvCbMZLSMErcHAh@app.eeeit.de> References: <20180502095855.Horde.pnF1J3CvBGrJMXFBiwHibZM@app.eeeit.de> <20180504122635.Horde.BLpo7EULCvCbMZLSMErcHAh@app.eeeit.de> From: Mike Gerdts Date: Fri, 4 May 2018 07:56:58 -0500 Message-ID: Subject: Re: Centos7 uefi boot problem with bhyve after update To: Michael Reifenberger Cc: Jason Tubnor , freebsd-virtualization@freebsd.org Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.25 X-BeenThere: freebsd-virtualization@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.25 Precedence: list List-Id: "Discussion of various virtualization techniques FreeBSD supports." The current UEFI code does not save non-volatile variables to persistent storage. Guest o/s's are increasingly writing their efi loaders to non-standard locations and using nv vars to direct UEFI to boot from these locations. I'm (very slowly) merging a fix from Leon for this in both UEFI and bhyve which directs nv var writes to a file on the host, providing a persistent store. later, Peter.
