Save these two lines as try.c: // \ x void f(void) {} Then observe: $ gcc -pedantic-errors -std=3Dc11 -c /tmp/try.c=20 (no output) $ /usr/bin/clang -pedantic-errors -std=3Dc11 -c /tmp/try.c=20 /tmp/try.c:1:4: error: multi-line // comment [-Werror,-Wcomment] // \ ^ 1 error generated. Reading up in C99, C11, C++11, it is clear that line merging happens in compilation phase 2, before phase 3 elides comments and replaces them by one space. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-toolchain@freebsd.org Mon Mar 23 13:31:20 2020 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-toolchain@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B5EB42634A3 for ; Mon, 23 Mar 2020 13:31:20 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (mailman.nyi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::50:13]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 48mFdh36nGz4LN8 for ; Mon, 23 Mar 2020 13:31:20 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) id BD48A26349E; Mon, 23 Mar 2020 13:31:19 +0000 (UTC) Delivered-To: toolchain@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BB77926349C for ; Mon, 23 Mar 2020 13:31:19 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:3]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org", Issuer "Let's Encrypt Authority X3" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 48mFdf4mZbz4LKn for ; Mon, 23 Mar 2020 13:31:18 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::50:1d]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id EC3FBF269 for ; Mon, 23 Mar 2020 13:31:16 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.5]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id 02NDVGpo010542 for ; Mon, 23 Mar 2020 13:31:16 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: (from www@localhost) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id 02NDVGvn010541 for toolchain@FreeBSD.org; Mon, 23 Mar 2020 13:31:16 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) X-Authentication-Warning: kenobi.freebsd.org: www set sender to bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org using -f From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: toolchain@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 245006] toolchain: clang issues bogus "warning: multi-line // comment [-Wcomment]" Date: Mon, 23 Mar 2020 13:31:17 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: CC X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: standards X-Bugzilla-Version: 12.1-RELEASE X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Some People X-Bugzilla-Who: mandree@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: standards@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-toolchain@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.29 Precedence: list List-Id: Maintenance of FreeBSD's integrated toolchain List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 23 Mar 2020 13:31:20 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D245006 --- Comment #1 from Matthias Andree --- sorry, this escaped too soon. We probably need the same fix for base/gcc when the build = host is > aarch64. Looks like in devel/freebsd-gcc* such code is like: .if ${TARGETARCH} =3D=3D "armv6" || ${TARGETARCH} =3D=3D "aarch64" . if ${COMPILER_TYPE} =3D=3D clang MAKE_ARGS+=3DCXXFLAGS=3D-fbracket-depth=3D512 . endif .endif There is no armv6 flavor in FLAVORS, nor armv7. But having armv6 above but not armv7 looks a little odd. (When I later tried base/gcc6 on an armv7 it also had the problem.) Also, TARGETARCH seems to be the target, not the host. All hosts using clang get the larger bracket depth for handling the listed arm targets, if I read the above right. base/gcc6 does not use FLAVOR and has: TARGETARCH=3D ${ARCH:S/amd64/x86_64/} So, again, it looks like explicitly covering "armv7" would be appropriate for base/gcc* examples that can handle armv7 reasonably. (Unsure for gcc6.) =3D=3D=3D Mark Millard marklmi at yahoo.com ( dsl-only.net went away in early 2018-Mar) From owner-freebsd-toolchain@freebsd.org Mon Mar 23 18:34:41 2020 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-toolchain@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3DEF426B208 for ; Mon, 23 Mar 2020 18:34:41 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (mailman.nyi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::50:13]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 48mNMj0zwsz4N61 for ; Mon, 23 Mar 2020 18:34:41 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) id 21A7826B207; Mon, 23 Mar 2020 18:34:41 +0000 (UTC) Delivered-To: toolchain@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 215B226B206 for ; Mon, 23 Mar 2020 18:34:41 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:3]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org", Issuer "Let's Encrypt Authority X3" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 48mNMj04R4z4N5r for ; Mon, 23 Mar 2020 18:34:41 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::50:1d]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id F10AF1AC91 for ; Mon, 23 Mar 2020 18:34:40 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.5]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id 02NIYenA030881 for ; Mon, 23 Mar 2020 18:34:40 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: (from www@localhost) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id 02NIYev0030880 for toolchain@FreeBSD.org; Mon, 23 Mar 2020 18:34:40 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) X-Authentication-Warning: kenobi.freebsd.org: www set sender to bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org using -f From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: toolchain@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 245006] toolchain: clang issues bogus "warning: multi-line // comment [-Wcomment]" Date: Mon, 23 Mar 2020 18:34:40 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: CC X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: standards X-Bugzilla-Version: 12.1-RELEASE X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Some People X-Bugzilla-Who: dim@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Status: Open X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: standards@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: cc bug_status Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-toolchain@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.29 Precedence: list List-Id: Maintenance of FreeBSD's integrated toolchain List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 23 Mar 2020 18:34:41 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D245006 Dimitry Andric changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CC| |dim@FreeBSD.org Status|New |Open --- Comment #3 from Dimitry Andric --- Apparently gcc thinks the same, you just have to add -Wcomment: $ gcc -v Using built-in specs. I am hesitant to make changes to our versions unless there is a pressing need to do so. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-toolchain@freebsd.org Mon Mar 23 21:34:56 2020 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-toolchain@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E0BD5270A54 for ; Mon, 23 Mar 2020 21:34:56 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (unknown [127.0.1.3]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 48mSMh5kRPz3DLW for ; Mon, 23 Mar 2020 21:34:56 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) id C0BAD270A53; Mon, 23 Mar 2020 21:34:56 +0000 (UTC) Delivered-To: toolchain@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C0717270A52 for ; Mon, 23 Mar 2020 21:34:56 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:3]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org", Issuer "Let's Encrypt Authority X3" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 48mSMh4Hlfz3DLR for ; Mon, 23 Mar 2020 21:34:56 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::50:1d]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 8C0BC1CD90 for ; Mon, 23 Mar 2020 21:34:56 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.5]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id 02NLYuKx066069 for ; Mon, 23 Mar 2020 21:34:56 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: (from www@localhost) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id 02NLYuML066068 for toolchain@FreeBSD.org; Mon, 23 Mar 2020 21:34:56 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) X-Authentication-Warning: kenobi.freebsd.org: www set sender to bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org using -f From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: toolchain@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 245006] toolchain: clang issues bogus "warning: multi-line // comment [-Wcomment]" under -pedantic Date: Mon, 23 Mar 2020 21:34:56 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: CC X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: standards X-Bugzilla-Version: 12.1-RELEASE X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Some People X-Bugzilla-Who: mandree@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Status: Open X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: standards@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: see_also short_desc Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-toolchain@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.29 Precedence: list List-Id: Maintenance of FreeBSD's integrated toolchain List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 23 Mar 2020 21:34:57 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D245006 Matthias Andree changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- See Also| |https://bugs.llvm.org/show_ | |bug.cgi?id=3D45285 Summary|toolchain: clang issues |toolchain: clang issues |bogus "warning: multi-line |bogus "warning: multi-line |// comment [-Wcomment]" |// comment [-Wcomment]" | |under -pedantic --- Comment #4 from Matthias Andree --- After some digging, I figured that -pedantic -std=3Dc11 makes the differenc= e.=20 All GCC version I've tried (9.2.0, 10.0 snapshot) accept the code without diagnostics.=20 -pedantic interpretation differs. clang flags extensions, and gcc enables a= ll diagnostics required by the standard. gcc -O -std=3Dc11 -pedantic-errors -c /tmp/try.c=20 gcc10 -O -std=3Dc11 -pedantic-errors -c /tmp/try.c=20 (no output) clang -O -std=3Dc11 -pedantic-errors -c /tmp/try.c=20 /tmp/try.c:1:4: error: multi-line // comment [-Werror,-Wcomment] same for base clang and all clang versions from ports: llvm-devel-11.0.d20200117 LLVM and Clang llvm10-10.0.0.r4 LLVM and Clang llvm80-8.0.1_3 LLVM and Clang llvm90-9.0.1 LLVM and Clang I've filed this with LLVM, link in See Also.
