I repeated this test with a slightly different device backend (Samsung 850pro SSD on mps(4) instead of mfid(4)). After applying r358848 to stable/12, the numbers changed dramatically.0 on the same haswell based Xeon E3 platform. With the single SSD, the IOmeter numbers for ESXi as host drop from ~29000iops&530MB/s to ~11000/205MB/s.     But the numbers for bhyve as host raise from ~3800iops&69MB/s to ~8800/160MB/s at the same time!!! So there's still a penalty of ~20% for ahci-bhyve vs. ahci-esx, but this is a enourmous improvement. Please don't skip the MFC for r358848! Can I ask some questions about this? First: this patch seems to apply cleanly to 12.1. Is it safe? At least worth testing? Second. IIUIC it's useless to test this on an AMD system, since the patch only involves Intel CPUs. Right? Xeon are not affected, since they have vAPIC, so they should be already running as fast as possible. Correct? The description says "APIC virtualization is a Xeon feature that is missing on most (all?) desktop CPUs". Is there a way to check? Should it be reported as a CPU feature at boot? With which string? bye & Thanks av. Not all Xeon CPUs have vAPIC, especially the cheaper or workstation class so this may end up benefitting a lot of users. It turned our windows guest in their 1ru Xeon hosts into a different beast instantly. This is consistent with my current understanding, which is that the patch I provided fixes the data structure corruption issues (which showed u= p as some of the more "interesting" warnings and also sometimes as kernel panics= ). The timeouts and freezing appear to be due to the ENA driver having trouble allocating jumbo mbuf clusters during low-memory conditions. Can you check "sysctl -a | grep mjum_alloc_fail" (ideally, log it every minute and see if= it jumps around the times you see hanging)? I have a patch which I believe fixes this which I'd be happy to share if you want to try something experimental -- we're still discussing details about = the best way to address this, though.
