I think the use-case I am facing is different: the player is using /dev/dsp0.something, I have no control over it. Furthermore, since I installed virtual_oss all the audio devices have gone from PulseAudio, which is a little odd. On top of this, /dev/ is being populated with a lot of /dev/dsp0.x (now I have 14) and the number grows the more I use audio. Can my goal be achieved with virtual_oss or would you suggest some other tool? Thank you. And there is no environment variable to override this either? Did you try: strings `which mymusicplayer` One hackish way to get what you want is to: sysctl hw.snd.basename_clone=1 rm /dev/dsp0 touch /dev/dsp0.9 sysctl hw.snd.basename_clone=0 And create "dsp0" as a virtual_oss instance, routing all virtual_oss output to /dev/dsp0.9 instead. > Furthermore, since I installed virtual_oss all the audio devices have gone > from PulseAudio, which is a little odd. OSSv4 has some limits how many FDs can be opened at the same time. Above configuration is generic one. Still it is possible to use different device for microphone and speaker, but you need to: 1. start terminal. 2. export environment variables sndio config. 3. start chromium from that terminal so it gets the env config. By default sndio uses rsnd/0 that is HDMI in/out for me. rsnd/1 is the build in microphone, rsnd/2 is the build-in laptop speakers, rsnd/3 is the USB Headset, rsnd/4 is the USB Audio Card (SoundBlaster). Usually setting `export AUDIODEVICE=3D"rsnd/3"` is fine as system default to have audio unput/output on usb headset. Sometimes I need to switch to built in microphone (`rsnd/2`) and external usb audio loudspeakers (`rsnd/4`) that can be done by exporting variables in dedicated terminal then starting chrome from that terminal. PulseAudio allows to switch input/output on the fly during application run when the meeting takes place this is why I prefer PulseAudio. Hope that helps :-) Tomek --=20 CeDeROM, SQ7MHZ, http://www.tomek.cedro.info From nobody Tue Oct 5 22:29:51 2021 X-Original-To: freebsd-multimedia@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7220012DFAFB for ; Tue, 5 Oct 2021 22:29:59 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from kiri@truefc.org) Received: from kx.truefc.org (1.212.52.36.ap.yournet.ne.jp [36.52.212.1]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256 client-signature RSA-PSS (2048 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "smtp", Issuer "smtp" (not verified)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4HPC2H0Bfpz3rS4 for ; Tue, 5 Oct 2021 22:29:58 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from kiri@truefc.org) Received: from kx.truefc.org (kx.truefc.org [36.52.212.1]) by kx.truefc.org (8.16.1/8.16.1) with ESMTP id 195MTpav024388; Wed, 6 Oct 2021 07:29:52 +0900 (JST) (envelope-from kiri@kx.truefc.org) Message-Id: <202110052229.195MTpav024388@kx.truefc.org> Date: Wed, 06 Oct 2021 07:29:51 +0900 From: KIRIYAMA Kazuhiko To: Hans Petter Selasky Cc: KIRIYAMA Kazuhiko , Tomasz CEDRO , freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Mic does not work with Zoom on Chromium 92.0.4515.159. Environment: trying to grab audio from Firefox under KDE. Firefox is compiled with PULSEAUDIO on. When I enable virtual_oss and then start KDE there are no devices and the mixer does not work, so I cannot set the default playback device nor assign another playback device to Firefox when it outputs audio. It relays on hw.snd.default_unit (which happens to be set to 0). Furthermore when virtual_oss is started other apps behave inconsistently: vlc only shows the virtual_oss device in the list of output devices, all the other are gone, but audacity correctly shows the other rec devices as well as virtual_oss. What am I doing wrong? Thank you. Tomasz, your sndio tips help on my setup, now I can do audio confs in chromium, with appropriate x11 screen sharing [1]: vvvvv pcm0: at ? kld snd_uaudio (0p:0v/1r:2v) webcamd audio+video pcm1: at ? kld snd_uaudio (1p:5v/0r:0v) default mojo+speakers ^^^^^ $ touch /dev/dsp0 /dev/dsp1 $ export AUDIORECDEVICE=rsnd/0 $ export AUDIOPLAYDEVICE=rsnd/1 $ sndiod -ddd & snd0 pst=cfg.default: rec=0:1 play=0:1 vol=32768 dup listen(/tmp/sndio-1002/sock0|ini): created $ chrome --incognito --new-window --user-data-dir=$(mktemp -d -t incognito) https://whereby.com/ & I enabled sndio as a daemon, including the env vars: # /etc/rc.conf.d/sndiod sndiod_enable=YES sndiod_env="AUDIORECDEVICE=rsnd/0 AUDIOPLAYDEVICE=rsnd/1" I do notice that lossless music (e.g. flac or similar) isn't sounding as crisp, though, compared to my mojo chord USB-DAC. Not all video conferencing work in Firefox. This is why I find JITSI Meet best solution, it is also Open-Source. I stoppped using Chrome/Chromium several years ago when each my request and search was sent to Google even before DNS request. In Firefox I have FULL list of my devices, I can switch microphone on the fly during the conference. I have PulseAudio backend and I can also switch the sound ouput on the fly. It was possible in Chromium not that long ago, probably thanks to PA backend. Now I have to play with terminal, environment variables, and restart browser between each change. How is that better? The purpose of web video conferencing is quick meeting with focus on the subject of the meeting. Each time some people even using windows have some sound and microphone problems. Its like computers and internets showed up 2 weeks ago. Unbelievable. Also I noticed recent change between oss/sndio and PulseAudio - one card is 3 in pa while 4 in oss/sndio. That brings even more confusion. So my configuration created for sndio on meeting last month is now obsolete. This will touch you too one day. So many choices. What a wonderful world. -- CeDeROM, SQ7MHZ, http://www.tomek.cedro.info From nobody Thu Oct 7 15:10:46 2021 X-Original-To: freebsd-multimedia@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5E0BE17EA9EE for ; Thu, 7 Oct 2021 15:11:46 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from tomek@cedro.info) Received: from mail-ot1-x333.google.com (mail-ot1-x333.google.com [IPv6:2607:f8b0:4864:20::333]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_128_GCM_SHA256 (128/128 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256 client-signature RSA-PSS (2048 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "smtp.gmail.com", Issuer "GTS CA 1O1" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4HQFCj4Jr2z3hbS for ; Thu, 7 Oct 2021 15:11:45 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from tomek@cedro.info) Received: by mail-ot1-x333.google.com with SMTP id x33-20020a9d37a4000000b0054733a85462so7835886otb.10 for ; Thu, 07 Oct 2021 08:11:45 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=cedro.info; s=google; h=mime-version:references:in-reply-to:from:date:message-id:subject:to :cc; bh=QKN5Sy+kVJqRJ4k0+M1WtkAhIk5IFzSSHV0NXExfNDY=; b=QpMpBkyhshL6aZpRkerQuXzWcBMTa7wKPHptwxGnSeXdtVtl7ogsZ6PAjpI+4naXQI vmgoZn62kD05MdiRuL9Sk4nQCiBkQI9l/FUEnH1Gqy0kICAQ4p7ZJy7BfG/jD/jyWIfV JJFnBrOdfU6uPz1bWCJkUTS6BvN2O/mzTZ1z2aBEcdhUU9xyx74oSgypbuCHHzPZl9uy 8fptA4VEOFlIITfiQcYRYKk+Wx5lbFcKkabxO2kwgwmVGYUiJPWG7kqZvmp9cGWz23eP qaw/LYeyvEO6atrXwLeBy4ldsxtbEZCCw23QSMmTtqhHZX8JwS8lpEQSVoR9z8HSJOkH gnbw== X-Google-DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=1e100.net; s=20210112; h=x-gm-message-state:mime-version:references:in-reply-to:from:date :message-id:subject:to:cc; bh=QKN5Sy+kVJqRJ4k0+M1WtkAhIk5IFzSSHV0NXExfNDY=; b=mJqP/ZgK1YKy80Nwfm/nbwxVDw8LLPx0C7/DdzxrzrZvPgVwPKFxhMh3NbvPGUcM2L IBqf/Xs/j8Bdci3WaYwTNXVnkW/MCEBPsCpLlBMVMqK/5zZ6cAk/GO2sqP+ud/zMWTfO a4fRrZovRzge29ojPo30PZOHfUUuZZJMNQyhoAxFW0XZG6L+RivFmHYlv4vCFhoQ8sCX 4RXiYdPW9z1CNBofSO7QWdTVnvZ5yq3C1sOUFHSWXl2BMtLPGgiBVXNAp0EP0X/FAwKA PCzc0yKTJEd+CdSVD8eusGh9gGmpKTvhOGhlHnI5Yva9NVbWSBMADQkP9fEsXK6gGu4D bb2g== X-Gm-Message-State: AOAM531UNEppVYxPEmkDMim2880bowTalA4XhvMEHtV0tXnxBD1Q0XjU tJMe4k0K6mVwZJ/FgdcisRFuULUDjtXvjsOyr5XukFc9p9I= X-Google-Smtp-Source: ABdhPJx6X5i5aGkz7pZq/PxXKAxzL9Hzjw0Rz1HmxLk0yaiHjsuYIZfwpe65rnZ9x+9M9d+7DsAtThwQ2R8j0/wsepI= X-Received: by 2002:a05:6830:20da:: with SMTP id z26mr4181808otq.359.1633619499184; Thu, 07 Oct 2021 08:11:39 -0700 (PDT) List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Archive: https://lists.freebsd.org/archives/freebsd-multimedia List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org MIME-Version: 1.0 References: <202110041017.194AHqZ9085897@kx.truefc.org> <6323c7c6-1221-1bb4-6028-344fded44558@selasky.org> <202110041052.194AqeLc086237@kx.truefc.org> <9d9fcf6b-8c2d-8659-bd42-dfb61d2d74f7@selasky.org> <202110051033.195AXBsX059249@kx.truefc.org> <95138258-4c6b-92f4-fc56-45a4618edc8d@selasky.org> <202110051146.195BklYI092330@kx.truefc.org> <0b1ded5a-cfc8-1c2e-7920-eac257332298@selasky.org> <202110052229.195MTpav024388@kx.truefc.org> <202110070152.1971pxJ8061955@kx.truefc.org> <202110071201.197C1ATK068567@kx.truefc.org> <98204833-ee1e-4c2a-ab0d-cbbfff23faf7@www.fastmail.com> In-Reply-To: From: Tomasz CEDRO Date: Thu, 7 Oct 2021 17:10:46 +0200 Message-ID: Subject: Re: Mic does not work with Zoom on Chromium 92.0.4515.159. Why www/chromium port default AUDIO option set to PULSEAUDIO ? As far as I saw in log, default AUDIO changed from ALSA to SNDIO in Fri Oct 23 20:48:38 2020 : commit 288df69b89b14cea63c11bc2b0fd541749ffa0b2 Author: Joseph Mingrone Date: Fri Oct 23 20:48:38 2020 +0000 www/chromium: Use SNDIO instead of ALSA for audio by default There are stuttering sound issues when using ALSA, so switch to something that works.
