I have the above specified desktop machine. I've done searches and checked out the hardware compatibility list, but still not sure if all aspects are catered to. Has anybody installed on this machine before and, if so, did they encounter any hiccups or outright incompatibilities? Thanks for any time and trouble taken. Cheers! I have an intermittent problem with the boot process stopping just after identifying the disk drives. If the process had continued the next step would have been autoloading ichsmb.ko. I have always been able to reboot successfully by pressing the reset button after the problem. This isn't unique to 13.0, I've seen the same problem with 12.2. The problem only happens occasionally, I boot the PC every morning after shutting down at night and it can be several weeks between instances of the problem. -- Mike Clarke From owner-freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Sun May 9 17:00:21 2021 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-questions@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3601D63CAB8 for ; Sun, 9 May 2021 17:00:21 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from yasu@utahime.org) Received: from maybe.home.utahime.org (gate.home.utahime.org [183.180.29.210]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4FdVmh2hJCz3hQg for ; Sun, 9 May 2021 17:00:19 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from yasu@utahime.org) Received: from eastasia.home.utahime.org (eastasia.home.utahime.org [192.168.174.1]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature ECDSA (P-384) server-digest SHA384) (No client certificate requested) by maybe.home.utahime.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id F0069293EF for ; Mon, 10 May 2021 02:00:10 +0900 (JST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=simple/simple; d=utahime.org; s=maybe2019112701; t=1620579610; bh=mpeYl6FrJnYUCtY9r8WbXzGYMMKy+DiHkW64ygoUYvM=; h=Date:To:Subject:From; b=o+EFjXrK724jef9vcS4mxUQKC7SR6cw5i7KNj5dlbuPgGKppNhiAyyQSE0zuOn1tL Qlwpl3PMzRtE51iebXZAHBrRSRgGJAcjaDce3AiEx7SdRw68xNUL73wIBUqLWnoGd1 PITpW9Ebe7FpZrYRGy580OOjtDBkk3fdqJO36ZAU6xYH8KdiVSrpwRF1dWjQO5E6WC XDlr6yhC/E+MGWT1ievXCnJpBbf0pJdf5beFUfG/4WtUauipx/qYLv6B5xdwV9zFCK QxxStBjGzMb2jJAurFCz58Knp+Q+HbbRYURYZbZsHZEbzq9VaeCeOqSBYmk2WbjA3w W7+ZZHEvaKE8Q== Received: from localhost (rolling.home.utahime.org [192.168.174.11]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature ECDSA (P-384) server-digest SHA384) (No client certificate requested) by eastasia.home.utahime.org (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id 6FF8B23D23; Mon, 10 May 2021 02:00:10 +0900 (JST) X-Virus-Status: Clean X-Virus-Scanned: clamav-milter 0.103.2 at eastasia.home.utahime.org Date: Mon, 10 May 2021 01:59:11 +0900 (JST) Message-Id: <20210510.015911.1300149826239748861.yasu@utahime.org> To: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Subject: How to know which version of NFS protocol is used From: Yasuhiro Kimura X-Mailer: Mew version 6.8 on Emacs 27.2 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: Text/Plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Rspamd-Queue-Id: 4FdVmh2hJCz3hQg X-Spamd-Bar: / Authentication-Results: mx1.freebsd.org; dkim=pass header.d=utahime.org header.s=maybe2019112701 header.b=o+EFjXrK; dmarc=none; spf=pass (mx1.freebsd.org: domain of yasu@utahime.org designates 183.180.29.210 as permitted sender) smtp.mailfrom=yasu@utahime.org X-Spamd-Result: default: False [-0.70 / 15.00]; RCVD_VIA_SMTP_AUTH(0.00)[]; MV_CASE(0.50)[]; R_SPF_ALLOW(-0.20)[+a:spf-authorized.utahime.org]; TO_DN_NONE(0.00)[]; HFILTER_HELO_IP_A(1.00)[maybe.home.utahime.org]; HFILTER_HELO_NORES_A_OR_MX(0.30)[maybe.home.utahime.org]; RCVD_COUNT_THREE(0.00)[3]; DKIM_TRACE(0.00)[utahime.org:+]; NEURAL_HAM_SHORT(-1.00)[-1.000]; FROM_EQ_ENVFROM(0.00)[]; MIME_TRACE(0.00)[0:+]; RBL_DBL_DONT_QUERY_IPS(0.00)[183.180.29.210:from]; ASN(0.00)[asn:2519, ipnet:183.180.0.0/16, country:JP]; ARC_NA(0.00)[]; NEURAL_HAM_MEDIUM(-1.00)[-1.000]; R_DKIM_ALLOW(-0.20)[utahime.org:s=maybe2019112701]; FROM_HAS_DN(0.00)[]; TO_MATCH_ENVRCPT_ALL(0.00)[]; NEURAL_HAM_LONG(-1.00)[-1.000]; MIME_GOOD(-0.10)[text/plain]; DMARC_NA(0.00)[utahime.org]; PREVIOUSLY_DELIVERED(0.00)[freebsd-questions@freebsd.org]; RCPT_COUNT_ONE(0.00)[1]; SPAMHAUS_ZRD(0.00)[183.180.29.210:from:127.0.2.255]; MID_CONTAINS_FROM(1.00)[]; RCVD_TLS_ALL(0.00)[]; MAILMAN_DEST(0.00)[freebsd-questions] X-BeenThere: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.34 Precedence: list List-Id: User questions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 09 May 2021 17:00:21 -0000 Hello, When remote file system is mounted with NFS, is there any way to know which version of NFS protocol (2, 3, 4.0, 4.1, 4.2) is used? My sincere apologies if this question is answered elsewhere. I'm trying to better understand Section 5.4 of the FreeBSD manual: https://docs.freebsd.org/en/books/developers-handbook/policies/#policies-= encumbered I find the following wording from the FreeBSD manual confusing: --- 1. Any file which is interpreted or executed by the system CPU(s) and=20 not in source format is encumbered. 2. Any file with a license more restrictive than BSD or GNU is encumbered= =2E 3. A file which contains downloadable binary data for use by the=20 hardware is not encumbered, unless (1) or (2) apply to it. It must be=20 stored in an architecture neutral ASCII format (file2c or uuencoding is=20 recommended). --- From my (admittedly weak) understanding of FreeBSD, closed-source files = can be broken down into three categories: 1. Kernel Modules (primarily drivers) that operate in kernel-space 2. Firmware that is loaded into hardware on hardware power-up and is=20 *not* executed on the system CPU (either in kernel-space or user-space) 3. Software that runs in user-space (games, applications, etc) A cursory reading would indicate that closed-source kernel modules are=20 encumbered, but I'm uncertain about proprietary firmware. How are=20 proprietary firmware files licensed? Assuming that all closed-source drivers *and* firmware fall in the=20 "encumbered" category, is there a way to prevent FreeBSD from loading=20 *any* encumbered drivers while still maintaining encumbered firmware?=20 Page 19 of "Absolute FreeBSD" by Michael W. Lucas* recommends avoiding=20 all proprietary drivers. Is that the standard out-of-the-box behaviour=20 of FreeBSD (as it is for Fedora GNU/Linux), or must a user manually=20 disable proprietary drivers during/post-installation? I would like to avoid proprietary drivers but am uncertain about how to=20 do so. In Fedora GNU/Linux I simply don't enable the closed-source=20 driver repositories. * An excellent book, by the way.
