It looks like "nojailvnet" actually means "allow vnet jails", according to = the rc(8) manpage. The wording for that rc keyword could've been chosen better, IMHO, but in my case, I am using a VNET-enabled jail to run bhyve in. So I don't think this is the exact cause. Rather than keep running this experiment on my production appliance, I dug = an older appliance out of a box and setup a clone of the production appliance's filesystem on it to use as a toy, and tried to re-replicate the case where = tap0 was getting "lost", but so far, I have no been able to find a reproducible cause. Stopping the jail while bhyve was running and then trying to restar= t it kinda-reproduced my initial scenario where netif was unable to create tap0 = on jail start-up, but simply destroying the "dead" bhyve instance from the host-level, then restarting the jail cleared that and tap0 could be re-crea= ted. So I am a bit stumped how I originally triggered this fluke in a way that w= as unrecoverable w/o a reboot. That said, dropping the jail w/ bhyve running = will still create a point where the handle for tap0 is still held by bhyve and t= hus, it can't be recreated next time the jail is restarted until the bhyve sessi= on is destroyed at the host level. So that might be a good debugging point for someone to look into the tap(4) driver to see if there's a way to mitigate this. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Sun May 21 18:48:49 2023 X-Original-To: net@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4QPV3Q50CVz4CL5h for ; Given this seemed to be periodic-ish and I only always notice way after the facts I started to poke around and found: ndp -P ndp -R rtsol wlan0 fixes things. I've seen similar problems with NDP vs. routing table updates and another rtsol call would not bring back the default route unless ndp -R was run before and I wonder if these are connected. Both have become a bit annoying problems on a day-to-day IPv6-only usage for me that I had never experienced like this (in the last decade) before. There were a number of changes related to routing/ndp (by me) and PCB = table split work, so there are multiple candidates for the issue. The ownership for creating 127.0.0.1 belongs to the rc.d = (network.subr:ifn_start() -> ipv4_up()). It is executed at the system start or jail start (explicitly by running = /etc/rc). The ownership for creating ::1 belongs to the kernel. When the userland (most likely, network.subr when adding 127.0.0.1) = calls SIOCAIFADDR (note it=E2=80=99s setting _alias_, not SIOCSIFADDR), It gets passed via kern_ioctl() to soo_ioctl() and then to = if.c:ifioctl(). Ifioctl() then calls in_aifaddr_ioctl(). in_aifaddr_ioctl() handler calls if_ioctl() for SIOCSIFADDR (set, but = not alias) before assigning the address. Loopback handler (loioctl()) sets IFF_UP flag and schedules taskq link = state change. Then, in_aifaddr_ioctl() adds the ifa & interface routes and completes, = returning to ifioctl(). Ifioctl() inspects the changed interface flags and, if IFF_UP is added = it explicitly calls in6_if_up() for the interface. in6_if_up() kicks up DAD and calls in6_ifattach(). Finally, = in6_ifattach() calls in6_ifattach_loopback() which adds ::1 and fe80::1. As a result, when adding 127.0.0.1 to lo0 from userland, ::1 gets = automatically added by the kernel. (I=E2=80=99m not sure what part of the process above I dislike the most = - there are too many of them). My main question here is the desired ownership model. I don=E2=80=99t = have a strong opinion on whether the userland of the kernel should own = loopback creation. However, I think that: 1) the behaviour should be consistent (either both of them created by = the userland or both created by the kernel) 2) the process should be independent (e.g. adding address from one = family shouldn=E2=80=99t result in adding address from the other = family). For example, it can be either userland explicitly creates both or the = kernel creates both on interface up, using protocol hooks). 3) I=E2=80=99m not sure SIOCSIFADDR should be (ab)used by the drivers = ioctls(). That model dates back to BSD 4.4 and doesn=E2=80=99t look well = in presence of event handlers. Most drivers (default ethernet handler, loop, gre, disc,me,ipsec) just = set IFF_UP there. So, the ownership of their creation seems to me good from the userland (i.e.: rc.d): Administrators are free to configure them or not. I agree with point 1 (consistency) and point 2 (independency), and about point 3 I have no technical knowledge here, but the work of cleaning up and making the proposal coherent seems good too :-) Regards, Olivier --000000000000392dfb05fc4877f6 Content-Type: text/html; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable

Modern NICs offload a lot of the protocol stack processing (checksum, segmentation, and / or reassembly) from the CPU to dedicated silicon, whereas inter-vnet traffic needs to be handled completely in software, that's where the difference comes from. Perhaps we could gain some speed by abusing mbuf flags to skip RXCSUM for epair traffic, maybe even skip and fake TXCSUM... Documentation for 10G cards and other drivers suggest enabling rxcsum for RSS and disabling otherwise. From TCP's point of view, your iperf result shows= "Retr" as retransmissions. Well, that tells packet drops or some= thing else which makes TCP's congestion control into playing throttling= the throughput to a certain degree.

Try a differe= nt TCP congestion control. If the default is CUBIC, try to use NewReno. I d= on't know your FreeBSD version. So if it is FreeBSD14-current, I would = like to see the difference as there is improvement discussion on CUBIC.
