This switches the recently added "net.inet6.ip6.use_stableaddr" sysctl to on by default, causing all new IPv6 interfaces configured to get SLAAC addresses to not derive their addresses from the MAC address but using an implementation of the algorithm suggested by RFC 7217. This is similar to the defaults on most other operating systems. Such addresses are derived by various information on the system so as to be stable for the single host(OS installation) being attached to the same network, but making it near to impossible to track hosts between networks, or exposing the MAC address. The consequence of this is that hosts configured to use SLAAC addresses on IPv6 interfaces will experience an IP change when upgrading across this change. While I'd suggest to adjust to such a change, considering the privacy implications, if strictly needed the change can be prevented in two ways: - Set the net.inet6.ip6.use_stableaddr sysctl to 0 via loader. This is required since the sysctl needs to be set before any interface are created. - set the "-stableaddr" via sysctl, for example in rc.conf. As a sidenote I plan to MFC the relevant code to stable/15, but keep the default for the sysctl to off there. I put a patch in this PR that acquires/releases an extra refcnt on the socket and that appears to *fix* the crashes. But, I don't see why an extra refcnt should be needed (the code without the extra refcnt has worked for at least a decade) and the patch just paves over the real bug. So, does anyone have any insight into what might have changed (since FreeBSD-14, it appears) that would result in a premature soclose()/soabort()/.. which would cause this? --> Unfortunately, the way sorele() is implemented implies that an extra call to it will not be checked, if I read the code correctly? (Put another way, the patch I put on the PR might result in an extra sorele(), but that won't affect the outcome. Nice, in the sense that it means the patch is safe to use, but not so nice in that there won't be any panic() if there is an extra sorele() happening somewhere.) Currently, the implementation is unaware of FIBs and maintains a global routing table. I've posted a set of patches to phabricator which introduce per-FIB multicast routing tables for both IPv4 and IPv6; the first patch in the series is here, and the rest are linked from the "stack" tab: https://reviews.freebsd.org/D55236 The patches are somewhat large but are mostly just moving various objects into a per-FIB structure rather than having a bunch of global (per-VNET) state scattered around. The end result is that one can run an independent multicast routing daemon in each FIB on a system; the routing tables and multicast interface indices managed by each daemon are completely separate. I'd appreciate any review or testing. If anyone is interested in this project, please let me know. Thanks to Stormshield and Klara for sponsoring this work. I did a quick check and it does not work as expected. If my understanding is correct (correct me if I'm wrong), the problem is no= t that M_PROMISC needs to be restored in the same routine. The problem seems to be that ether_input_internal() is not executed till th= e end if netgraph (or bridge) claims the frame. All destination address checks are performed at the end of ether_input_inte= rnal() and are skipped if netgraph claims a frame. Because M_PROMISC is always set to 0 before the frame is being passed to ne= tgraph, and netgraph passes the mbuf to ether_demux(), there is never a cha= nce for M_PROMISC to survive in the chain even if destination address check= s were performed and M_PROMISC was set accordingly - it is always unset. As M_PROMISC together with M_PPROMISC are the only indicators for ether_dem= ux() to drop a frame, this never happens. Maybe I understand something wrong...? I think it may be worth thinking about re-ordering the checks or moving the= m to ether_demux(). -------------------------------------------------- I also did a dirty test with the following. Of course this can't be a solut= ion but it adds an (incomplete) check to ether_demux() and mitigates the is= sue. diff --git a/sys/net/if_ethersubr.c b/sys/net/if_ethersubr.c index 9c157bf3d..4cfddafd6 100644 --- a/sys/net/if_ethersubr.c +++ b/sys/net/if_ethersubr.c @@ -890,6 +890,10 @@ ether_demux(struct ifnet *ifp, struct mbuf *m) return; } + if (!ETHER_IS_MULTICAST(eh->ether_dhost) && + memcmp(IF_LLADDR(ifp), eh->ether_dhost, ETHER_ADDR_LEN) != =3D 0) + m->m_flags |=3D M_PROMISC; + /* * Pass promiscuously received frames to the upper layer if the use= r * requested this by setting IFF_PPROMISC. I booted the one sy= stem experiencing this issue, a NUC8i5BEK, and when running 'jail -r , the interface stops responding for several seconds while the jail shuts down and the em0 interface is removed from bridge0. I can test this by pressing a k= ey several times in an SSH session and there will be no input/output until the interface picks back up. Conversely, if I use net/intel-em-kmod, after patching it slightly to make it work with 15.0-RELEASE, the hang does not happen and you can type stuff while the 'jail -r' command is running. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Fri Feb 13 01:19:20 2026 X-Original-To: net@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4fBvTP2ckVz6S4hN for ; There was some personal tragedy involved. The resolution for this is being tracked at: https://reviews.freebsd.org/D5= 5031 With a minor errno correction at: https://reviews.freebsd.org/D55233 TL;DR This is purely an optional extension. It is not and never was a bug. = The OpenJDK and other software started relying on it over the years, but it rea= lly doesn't fit with how the socket APIs involved were intended to operate, at = all. It largely stems from uncertainty about the extent of IPv4-mapped address support, as tuexen has indicated. The cheap fix is to just do what Apple did and just pass it through to neti= net for simple ASM-mode adds/joins, which is the most common multicast use case anyway, and it's usually for local link scoped groups. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug. I only just got reinstated by core@ on Sunday, and I only just regained access to the cluster this morning after t= he better part of 10 years. You didn't state which "Patch" you tried to use. There are two Differential= s. One of those patches only changes the errno value for the non-AF_INET6 addr= ess and length case. The other is based on a change from Apple and is most like= ly incomplete, and Glebius already pointed out it needs adjustment for our sta= ck. You clearly read the review, so you are aware it hasn't actually been tested yet, as there is no Kyua test case for it. And it most likely will only work because inp_moptions is still present even in a NOINET kernel. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug. I'd have to reboot the machine to really check, as I put it back on its working configuration. That said, I do remember in some instances where the bridge member addition= or removal sometimes look longer than TCP expected it to and my SSH session wo= uld drop due to timing out. Didn't happen all the time, though. If there's a debug flag or something I can toggle to get you better info, I can do that,= but I don't think this is expected behavior, since the former Intel-maintained driver can modify the bridge w/o flapping the interface. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Sat Feb 14 07:59:53 2026 X-Original-To: net@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4fChK83hP8z6RQrs for ; I can clearly prove that the base system em(4) driver exhibits the behavior, while the variant provi= ded by net/intel-em-kmod does not. That's a sign that it's more likely an issue with the base system em(4) driverm not epair(4). Nor do I think it is bridge(4) that is at fault, as I have other FreeBSD systems using re(4), igb(4), and lagg(4) that also use jails with epair(4),= and starting/stopping their jails does not cause a temporary loss of network connectivity, like I am seeing with em(4) (and as others in the referenced Reddit thread also noticed). --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.=
