FreeBSD is not even close to that speed. I have tried a bunch of different things, but I always seem to end up with a speed close to 700 kilobits. This is all on gigabit links. I've seen a similar problem (30-second timeout in the code due to a race condition). You might want to try the attached patch. It fixed the slowness for me.
