The EHS is started just as soon as it's possible > for me to start it, I'm afraid. Umm... How is this? If you read his post, he said "or as a menu alternative". Why not have one? You choose it, it throws you an "ok/cancel" requester which says: This option disables the fixit floppy and floppy installation menu alternatives. Are you sure you want to continue with opening the shell? And if confirmed, go ahead... Throw up a shell at vty3 and disable the apropriate options. Later when you intend to throw up the shell, just check if it's allready there, and don't, if it is.
