(In reply to Joseph Mingrone from comment #6)

I initially tried compiling on FreeBSD version 10.2-RELEASE-p14. As part o=
f my
testing, I upgraded to 10.3-RELEASE-p6 and tried again with the same result=
.=20
Searching the ports tree, I do have the latest R version:

Port: R-3.3.1_3
Path: /usr/ports/math/R
Info: Language for statistical computing and graphics

So, I tested in a 10.3 jail to see if a fresh clean install will make a
difference. This made me realize that the issue was in my Cairo configurat=
ion
settings. The Cairo port was installed as a dependency for an unrelated po=
rt,
since my FreeBSD box is a server. Because I didn't see a need for X11, I h=
ad
deselected OpenGL, X11, and XCB in the Cairo config, keeping only Glib. Th=
is
was the problem. I reset the Cairo config, reinstalled the port, and then R
compiled and installed with no problem.

Thanks for looking into this even after the bug report was closed. Out of
curiosity, is it possible to add a detailed Cairo check in the R port?
