I believe that it is the same model which is used in the F580 and similar F-series notebooks. I don't use an external CDRW off a USB or PCMCIA dongle. A person I used to work with has a PCG-XG28; they use a PCMCIA based CDRW with success, but the card has to be there, and the drive on, at boot time.
