Seems there were a few complications, but I had StarOffice up and running maybe a couple years ago--and I found it a bloated and clunky version of $msword with help files in German. I personally recommend Corel WP which you can get for free as well. It runs in X (of course) and requires the Linux libraries. With this, I've been creating and exchanging compatible documents with clients all over as it converts to word 6.0/7.0 (among a slug of other formats) quite easily. I bought the registered version ($50) for the extra features and manual (which turned out to stink).
