Unfortunately it's not easy to get this kind of diagnostic out of the
index build as it stands (perhaps someone with more perl-fu could
modify the make_index script to provide more helpful failure
information).

In this case, I believe it was the autoconf257 port itself that caused
the error (alane already fixed it).
