Thank you for your reply. /etc/resolv.conf was the first thing I checked.
It had not been changed (I double checked both machined /etc/resolv.conf
before I restarted named). That's why I'm so perplexed. It seems like I'm
doing something blatantly stupid, or something 'devious' is going on. It
seems more likely to be the former :(.

BTW, restarting named did not fix my problem.
