I always run screen(1) in my xterm windows, with a TERM=vt220, which
works fine for all the programs I regularly use.
Another solution is probably to set the following X11 resource in your
~/.Xresources file:
XTerm*deleteIsDEL: true
and 'merge' the new .Xresources file with:
$ xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources
