This was a brand new FreeBSD 4.5-REL machine with a few ports: jove and XFree86-3 both installed from a freshly cvsup'd ports tree, and the portupgrade utility. The next command was to "portinstall -vp kde" so if there's something old or missing, it is KDE's fault for not specifying it properly. If it requires XFree86 4.x, then it should say so. There is no freetype or freetype2 library installed at all, so that could be a missing dependency that causes it to fail.
