I had same problem/behavior here with an AMI/LSILogic MegaRAID Express 300
(Series 490). Motherboard is dual processor Intel Cypress, used with only
one processor and uniprocessor kernel.

In my case just upgrading the firmware solved the problem.

Old firmware worked with 4.7-RELEASE but froze with 4.7-STABLE as of
this morning (and last friday):
Jan 14 12:10:07 atlantic /kernel.old: FreeBSD 4.7-RELEASE #0: Wed Oct 9 15:08:34 GMT 2002
[snip]
Jan 14 12:10:08 atlantic /kernel.old: amr0: <AMI MegaRAID> mem 0xf4400000-0xf47fffff irq 10 at device 13.1 on pci0
Jan 14 12:10:08 atlantic /kernel.old: amr0: <Series 490> Firmware H793, BIOS 2c00, 32MB RAM

New firmware works with 4.7-STABLE:
Jan 14 13:50:51 atlantic /kernel: FreeBSD 4.7-STABLE #0: Tue Jan 14 11:53:08 CET 2003
[snip]
Jan 14 13:50:52 atlantic /kernel: amr0: <LSILogic MegaRAID> mem 0xf4400000-0xf47fffff irq 10 at device 13.1 on pci0
Jan 14 13:50:52 atlantic /kernel: amr0: <Series 490> Firmware H79N, BIOS 2.10, 32MB RAM
