Yes it does.  Just like when you load a tape into a QIC-60 or QIC-150
tape drive.  It is a brand new cartridge. 

I couldn't even do an mt /dev/rsa0 status.  I received the same error.

I am going to play with it tonight and try another new tape.  The drive
was working correctly in a RedHat 5.2 machine (Which is being replaced
with a machine with a better OS...FreeBSD :-)
