When you setup your network with /stand/sysinstall,
I've read that you shouldn't try to fake it and
put in made up info like you can get by with doing
in Linux, but should just leave it blank. On my linux
box, it's listed under host as dennyboy & under domain
as cableone.net, which is not really a domain but as
I said, faking it. Freebsd won't allow me to leave it
blank and continue with the setup though. I also just
read in one of the install tutorials:

Host
The fully-qualified hostname, e.g. 486.weeble.com in this case.
Domain
The name of the domain that your machine is in, e.g. weeble.com

Should I have put dennyboy.cableone.net in the host box and
cableone.net in the domain box? If so, can someone please point
me to the docs locale where I can read how to do this without
going back to sysinstall? I can get on the Internet with the
setup like it is, connected through a netgear hub & linksys
router, but at very dismal speeds, even though I have a 10/100
linksys pcmcia lan card, and I think my setting all this up
wrong is what has caused me not to be able to get samba to run
right, which I need for sharing files with my win98 box, & not
to be able to properly use telnet, ssh or ftp between my
computers. The laptop is a toshiba satellite PII 266 running
freebsd 4.3. Thanks for any help I can get on this. Please
advise if I need to put more info in here. Tried to remember to
list all info I thought would be needed & to read all the
documentation I could get my hands on, both in my distro & on
the internet, but I just can't seem find a mention of this
particular problem.
