Maybe I have found a pointer to a source for some of this confusion: When
xf86config (run from sysinstall) asks the user to specify which device
file to use for the mouse, both suggestions for common names it gives
('/dev/tty00' and '/dev/mouse') are not valid in the current situation of
FreeBSD... 

Just my 5 cents (cents have long ago gone out in this country :-) )
