O Ye of Little Faith department: I was joking, but since I'd never tried the Toothpaste Gambit, I experimented on my one unplayable CD ("Officium," Jan Garbarek and the Hilliard Ensemble). I carefully cleaned the CD beforehand, then polished away with toothpaste (gel, actually; perhaps not as effective, but it's what I had). The CD looks worse - lots of small scratches - but now plays through, whereas before it would not. Thanks for saving me the $20 or so on a replacement CD.
