It is easily as nephanous a concept as "Operating System" (which see: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=define%3A%22operating+system%22 ) (noting carefully that at least one of those items is the canonical definition of a kernel) (And more to the point, that virtually any explicitly named item could be deleted, and probably has been in some operating system somewhere). A concise definition is not really possible for "desktop" since it is not a technical nor scientific term. Unless you wish to define it dogmatically, in which case: good luck.
