One must do BOTH sets of Alt/Meta (L and R) to make it work under the shell (xterm) and in XEmacs, and Netscape. In my .Xmodmap file I added: keysym Alt_L = Meta_L keysym Meta_L = Alt_L keysym Alt_R = Meta_R keysym Meta_R = Alt_R And it did the trick next time I logged in.
