How am I supposed to know the root of any particular dependency tree?

It is so much easier to know the top, as in portupgrade -R gnome since
it is obvious to anyone that the meta-port is the place to start.

It is completely un-intuitive to expect anyone to do it in reverse,
unless the port* tools provide the necessary clues, or some other file
provides the clue, such as the meta-port, for instance?

But this does not help for an upgrade. How do I know that the root of
gnome is pkgconfig, something which does not contain the word gnome
anywhere in it?
