The best, if not only, way to create an ext2 filesystem is to do it under Linux. So you looking at building a dual boot system or temporarily moving your disk onto a Linux box. However, I don't see why you absolutely have to have an ext2 filesystem directly installed on your FreeBSD box. Could you not run the build on FreeBSD, but write the output to a filesystem NFS mounted from a Linux box, or use rsync to copy the results of a build from the FreeBSD machine to a Linux machine?
