I think I spoke too soon: math/py-numpy built with Shane's suggestion, but
math/py-matplotlib did not.

Now the error is:

ImportError: /usr/local/lib/python2.7/site-packages/numpy/core/multiarray.so:
Undefined symbol "cblas_cdotc_sub"

Do you have any clues?
