Only way I KNOW (I got it from Greg Lehey, so it MUST be good <g>) is to go 
to your kernel compile doc and DELETE all references to APM.  It isn't enough 
just to rely on APM being disabled by default.

Since I recompiled my kernel to NOAPM I have had ZERO further trouble.
