Is the ping code the same on both Linux and FreeBSD?  On older SCO 
boxes it always says 0ms (and their TCP/IP is not all that great).
I would think ftp (or anything else) would be a better test of the 
TCP/IP stack.  I didn't see the original post so please accept my 
apologies if I'm just blathering.
