The vte (gnome-terminal depends on vte) is getting better and better at the every new version. The vte team (or just an author?) work(s) pretty hard on vte, they are doing the great job so far. In the Gnome 2.3.0 (vte 0.11.4), the most noticeable of improvement is using lesser CPU, little speed up, lesser lag when copy and paste, and etc even thought it's compiled with debug (-g).
