As far as XFree85-4, I have no idea. I've never seen that port anywhere. XFree on FreeBSD is available in two flavors: 3.3.6 (default, installed from distribution) and 4.x.x from the ports. If the KDE version in the ports tree isn't recent enough for you, just download the source, read the docs, ./configure && make && make install && enjoy. Now, as for "real unix", you have System IV/V and BSD style systems. They are not the same. Both are equally "real unix". Learning one does not make you proficient in the other. Open- and FreeBSD are both BSD (Berkley) based systems. Linux, UX, and Solaris are examples of SYSV style systems. Which do you want to learn? -----Original Message----- From: Morten Gulbrandsen [mailto:morten.gulbrandsen@t-online.de] Sent: Thursday, December 27, 2001 8:52 AM Cc: freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: startx crashes FreeBSD 4.2 Thank for the gently advice. This is a statement what I should have done,=20 I hereby apologize for not asking before=20 I started to install. I will newer ever=20 attempt to install everything, without proper investigation. What can I do now ? cd /usr/ports/x11/ make deinstall ? cd /usr/ports/x11/XFree85-4/ make install ? my problem is still that I cannot start the x server. What really is XFree85-4 ? I'm looking for a general purpose desktop solution, I have read recommendations about,=20 FreeBSD 4.4-Release XFree86 3.3.6 KDE 2.2 or higher. I want no linux emulations, and I want to get as close as possible=20 to real unix. I wanted to install some tools for viewing PostScript files. And for converting between PostScript and portable Document format. It was istalled , but it didn't work .=20 Yours Sincerely Morten Gulbrandsen Edwin Groothuis wrote: >=20 > On Thu, Dec 27, 2001 at 03:46:51AM +0100, Morten Gulbrandsen wrote: > > Hello, my problem is: > > startx gives fatal server error. >=20 > You should install only the port you're looking for, not everybody > in the x11-category: >=20 > cd /usr/ports/x11/XFree85-4 > make install >=20 > After you've installed it, run xf86config (or xf86cfg, I'm never > sure which one) and go on with the configuration stuff. >=20 > Edwin >=20 > -- > Edwin Groothuis | Personal website: http://www.MavEtJu.org > edwin@mavetju.org | Interested in MUDs?
