We migrated from BSDi 2.1 to FreeBSD 3.3 a few months ago without a
hitch. Make sure you have DES installed from 
ftp.internat.freebsd.org. Make sure you have user:*:100: in /etc/group as
under BSDi all normal users are placed in the one group, though you may
have users in other groups which you'll need to add as well.
