Well, FreeBSD is way easier for me to install than some other OSes, I have to admit. Having to rebuild part of my /usr/local is a bit of pain, since my home machine is not what I would call `state o' the art', but I prefer a clean, well-defined, upgrade procedure, than the usual Windows way of format-and-reinstall-everything. > Maybe if we looked at supporting past releases we could win some > fans in the business community. So true. There are people who are not upgrading to the latest -stable because they think that their 3.x installations are more stable. Then there are those who administer dozens of 3.x installations and want lots of time to upgrade them all. Then those who were waiting for 4.1 to become -stable and *then* start planning their upgrades. I could not agree more with the above statement. Recent threads in -current show that support for older releases should not be dropped the first few days, weeks or months that a new -stable is released. > Don't be surprised if FreeBSD doesn't take over the world because we > don't support users running past releases. It's all a matter of what you define as 'take over the world', but this is another topic. And I'm already way off-topic regarding the original post, while posting this reply. I just wanted to add my humble vote in the `we as in "the people who are actively using older releases" should spare some of our time in supporting those few that still run older releases.' I am nothing but a 4-stable user at the moment, but when I can help people with 3.x installations, I know I still do my best to help them :-) -- Giorgos Keramidas, < keramida @ ceid . upatras . gr > To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-chat" in the body of the message
