That was it.  rm'ed /usr/X11R6/include/libgnomevfs, and gnomedesktop
finished without error.  Had some other minor bumps with libaudiofile
and gdkpixbuf, but simply updating cleared them right up.  Happily
playing with Gnome2 now - first impression, it's surprisingly faster
all around.  Hooray!

Thanks Joe.  Hope you had a relaxing 4th - and weren't answering
gnome tech email all day.  :)
