 Hi Peter, I forgot to mention that you should  make sure you have the
following lines in your kernel configuration file:

  options         ATAPI         #Enable ATAPI support for IDE bus
  options         ATAPI_STATIC  #Don't do it as an LKM
  device          wcd0          #IDE CD-ROM

 I had the same problem you have a couple of months back and discovered I
was missing the 'options   ATAPI_STATIC' line.
