It looks like ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/i386/packages-9-stable/Latest has smlnj.tbz (for use with pkg_add). But be sure to check /usr/ports/lang/sml-nj/Makefile for possible runtime dependencies.
