Hi, If this is not the right place to drop the question, please point me to the proper list (maybe -current or -usb?). I recently bought a Dell E521. It runs XP with the normal problems :), I made it dual boot because eventually it should run FreeBSD and FreeBSD only. I tried FreeBSD 6.2, to no avail, even not with the USB ports disabled as suggested by Jean-Baptiste Quenot [1]. The results are the same as he describes. So I decided to go the brave way *cough* and get FreeBSD current /AMD64 as of 200611. I was able to boot, run the installer but it does not (as expected) understand the cdrom drive. However, it recognized the nic (bfe) so I could install over FTP from my other workstation. The install runs fine. After rebooting the system comes up fine. I installed cvsup, used the standard-supfile, ran cvsup, built world and a new GENERIC kernel. The system still boots fine (with mouse disconnected, that is). I compiled X, I am satisfied with the xorg 'nv' driver. Up till now I don't have problems with the mouse if I connect it after boot. Sound works as well (good job! :). So, my actual questions: 1) Since I could not find much info about problems with this machine after the post of Jean-Baptiste, I was wondering, is there still work being done on the USB-problems? 2) What is the status of de SATA driver for the CD/DVD player? The machine is not completely useless since it is dual boot, I am willing to do some tests (I am not a kernel programmer nor am I a low level hardware specialist). So if wanted, feel free to let me know.
