You can do a "dmesg | more" to review it. Before you start down the path of ppp you need to make sure you can control the modem. The easiest way that I know of to confirm basic modem command is by using the cu command. For example if your modem was cuaa0 you would type "cu -l /dev/cuaa0" at this point you should be able to ATDT the modem. Check out the man page for cu before you begin. It's kind of tough to get out of.
