I have a bunch of WD red drives in service and have never seen this problem= it looks like it is some incompatibility with the drive firmware and FreeBSD? I plan to replace this particular drive with a WD RED that I just ordered however I have a number of the Blues and could assist with the testing of a= fix if there is one available.
