I have been using -DCOMPAT_LINUX_THREADS and -DVM_STACK for a while and do not experience any X lockups or other problems with communicator (4.5 final). Also, ps works fine, but I did have similar problems with it a while ago. I could fix them by recompiling libkvm first, followed by related tools (ps, top, vmstat, [...]).
