And frankly, for someone as active on >this list as >you are, I would have hoped you could have proposed some solutions towards >informing and helping people deploy Java on FreeBSD than turning >them away from >it. > Hold on, let's back up here. The reason that I asked why didn't he run Solaris is NOT because I was telling him to run it. Far from it. The reason that I asked is that in his entire tirade/query/whatever, not once did he list a single reason why he was even looking at FreeBSD or Linux to start with. To answer his question, I have to take what he says at face value and make some reasonable assumptions. He stated that he was a professional Java developer. Well, then I think that it's very reasonable to assume that he must know all about Sun's solutions (ie: Solaris) and that there is some issue with Solaris that is causing him to reject it out of hand and consider FreeBSD and Linux. What I want to know is what in the hell this reason is?!? He certainly didn't say it. Without saying it, how can we as a community possibly even begin to showcase FreeBSD to him? We don't even know why he's even looking at us to start with!!! Frankly, stacking Solaris up against Linux is even odder - because Linux is a clone of SYSV, which is what Solaris is. If he finds FreeBSD lacking compared to Linux, I am just dying to know what about Solaris is lacking for what he wants to do compared to Linux! Please don't take this the wrong way, but I'm not interested that much in what YOU think makes FreeBSD better for Java. Your already sold on FreeBSD! I'm most interested in what HE thinks might POSSIBLY make FreeBSD better for Java because if he would just tell us what that was then we can spend our time taking about what HE is interested in on FreeBSD, not what WE are interested in.
