Ok, say no more.  Run Workgroups on the (spit) Windows machines, and use
Samba on the BSD box as a fileserver.  Samba is very cool and will
do everything you want and lots more 8)

Eyeball the comp.protocols.smb newsgroup for discussion on Samba.
