I've had a 3 Com 3C589C that ran with PAO without problems.

I had been told that you didn't need to use PAO under FreeBSD v2.2.5
that the 'stock' pccard support was working fine. Is this correct?
I've been having problems getting a 3Com 3C589D NIC running and I'm
wondering if I would have more luck with PAO.
