(I have several years of PC computer experience with a variety of operating systems, including technical support representative for two software publishers.) The fact that the drive was, as you say, in an old box, and subsequently DOA in DOS adds to my suspicion. I do not believe that there is anything in the driver/firmware interface which would precipitate the drive failure.
