Chad is exactly right.  I don't want my manual pages compressed.  Hard
drive space is cheap, and compressing them isn't really gaining me
anything.

So, how do we go about fixing the problem instead of just workinging
around it?

That doesn't sound like correcting the problem.  It sounds like
